I don't disagree that Family Guy is funnier to an extent now. My argument is based on who was better if you matched each up against one another based on their first 8 or 9 seasons because family guy hasnt been around more than that many seasons I don't think. I feel that the Simpsons by far are the superior cartoon based on which show was the best in their early years.

Hmm... I think if you compare Family Guy's first 3 seasons up again The Simpsons first 3, I still think the Griffins edge out the Simpsons by a hair, but that's just me. It's all subjective anyway. I prefer sexual-related humor as opposed to slapstick comedy.

Ahh but the earlier episodes of The Simpsons focused not on slapstick so much, but as a spoof of Americana and the modern family. 🙂

Well I guess you have to look at it like, in the early 90's the Simpsons could not have gotten away with the stuff that Family Guy could in the late 90's when sex and swearing was more accepted on major network television. But Family guy has began losing it's appeal by season 6, whereas the Simpsons got stronger every season up to around season 11 or 12 when they clearly began running out of ideas.

Ok, here's my two cents: The Simpsons was a classic cartoon that will go down in history as one of the best animated series of all times. But Family Guy will go down as one of the best animated series of the 21st century.

Seth MacFarlane is a brilliant satirist, who has used Family Guy as a medium to showcase his criticism of the ridiculous of modern age. He holds no punches, but he also doesn't pretend to be something he is not. He is a libaral, through and though, and he doesn't apologize for it.

As far as the flashback scenes go, he has established what we call in theatre: a convention. He has decided to take non-sequitor jokes that have nothing to do with the world of the Griffins, and used it to voice his humor on non-related topics. It may not make sense in the strict plot of the show, but the pattern creates a forum with which MacFarlane can comment on humorous observations that he sees throughout the show's longevity. It is random to some, but random humor can be funny for many people.

MacFarlane has shot himself in the foot by creating both American Dad, and the Cleveland spinoff, since they have almost the exact same formula, but Family Guy has remained a hilarious show, and will continue to be fantastic, as long as the creator doesn't get too cocky.

Call it whatever the hell you want, but it's lazy writing to think of something you remember from the past and giving it a funny twist. Peter is a fat, dim-witted dad with a lame job. Hmmmmmm.......sounds a lot like Homer Simpson. Secondly, by using the characters in all the flashbacks it shows that the writers cannot think of better ways to create humor with the characters other than by placing them in past pop-culture events. Terrible writing, regardless of whether or not people out there pretend to understand his techniques on a higher level then what us apparently slow witted people cant ever comprehend. Family guy characters are lazy and hollow.
