The widow of a victim of lung cancer caused by smoking tobacco was awarded $350K by a jury in New York. For the first time in jury history, money was rewarded against the tobacco industry. The widow, Gladys Frankson, says her late husband, Harry, picked up smoking at age 13. Gladys is suing the Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corp., makers of the Lucky Strike brand. Jury officials claim that the company had denied for years that their cigarettes were addictive.

Basically, its the tobacco co's fault for people exercising their right to choose?

Here's what's funny...if it's Luckies he smoked, they sued the wrong company! Lucky Strikes were manufatured and marketed by the American Tobacco Company, who also made Pall Mall, Tareyton, and all those other great old filterless brands...
B&W made Raleigh, and some others...

Lime, I think in a legal sense, they made the very best attempt to exert an influence, through media, etc., and they use that as a foundation. That's the basis for the success of these lawsuits...

Something I never understood. Smoke=Fire which equals burns, death, and pain. Everyone on this planet knows this, so why do people even THINK of putting smoke in their bodies? Are the masses truely that incompetant?:sowrong:

Nicotine is an addictive drug. Ignorance may get you started, but once you are addicted it is very hard to stop.

PS I have never smoked, but I know very smart people who have.

A lot of people who are dying from cigarette smoke now started smoking 20-40 years ago, before the dangers had been explored publically, and during a time when the tobacco companies were lying openly about the possible risks. Also this was during a period when it was more acceptable for tobacco companies to advertise towards children and teenagers.

And as milagros pointed out, once you get tricked into starting it's almost impossible to stop.
