So just what is so bloody great about America anyway?

good thread, Jim
Haven't laughed so much for ages-- keep the red flag flying!

It's not meant to be a piss-take Chris. It's genuinely meant to be a positive thread.

They're being screwed today as well. Unnaccountable government bodies are deciding (with no input whatsoever from the tribe involved) whether a certain tribe has the right to it's land, because they don't cross it a pre-set amount of times a year. If this commission decides against them, they forfeit the land, which duly will get sold to developers.

I can't. I just can't...

you can't what, Jim??

That is actually quite chilling. Rephrased it comes across as "so what if they were worthless, we were more intelligent than them so we had the right to con them" and "so what if the land was theirs? We had more people so we had the right to conquer it".
thanks jim-couldn't have put it better. I just don't think any country can be truly great unless it comes to terms with its past. The US, like almost every european country, has some very dark pages in its history. The idea is not to repeat the same mistakes, nor gloss over them as if 'it wasn't that bad.'

in my not so humble opinion

i think america has long since reached "great" status, whether we have suficently(enough for some) come to grips with our past or not.
some may not like it, but we are a great country😛 deal with it!

sorry if it seems like the majority of americans gloss over our past. then again maybe we are too busy living our lives in the world's greatest country, to be bothered with beating ourselves over the head over what happened a couple hundred years ago!

it's not that we don't care, it's more that we have better thing to do that sit around engaging in self-flagilation! :sowrong:

steve

I agree with you on the self-flagellation thingy Steve, there's nothing less constructive. I do believe in facing weaknesses and attempting to correct, but SF is just another PC PR exercise from what I've observed.

Come ye, come ye!

Guys, a quick request.

I started this thread to hear some things about America that have touched you personally. The joy of being in a country that competes so fiercely at athletics that it drags a bag full of gold medal home every Olympics, a country that has the joy of every type of terrain known to man, etc. I wanted to hear some things that have touched your lives personally. Some of the posts though have come across as nothing more than an automatically regurgitated political advert.

Let's have some real feeling gents and lasses, not verbatim regurgitation of what was chucked down your neck at school. What have you personally felt that's great about the land?

Tough question. I'd have to say the one thing I love about this country is it's landmarks.....I've sen the Space Needle in Seattle (awesome) Statue of Liberty in New York (not quite as nice, but still cool) The Alamo in san antonio (really cool) and my fav, epicott center in florida.

something that has touched me

the reaction that a man in uniform will sometimes get.
i never got these reactions when i was active duty, but that was too close to viet nam, and folks were too anti-military back then.

once when comming home from a re-enacting event, i was stopped at a state police check point. everyone was being checked for alcohol, seat belts, and insurance. well i was decked out in my airborne class A's, the officer (very cute lady) took one look at me, snapped to attention, rendered a salute, and said "sorry sir, you can go on".
i was so happy to see that a service man would be given a pass

last year at a parade (not sure if it was memorial day, or 4th of july) i posted this at that time. a wonderfull lady ran out from the crowd, threw her arms around me, gave me a big kiss, and said "thank you for serving". i was so touched, i didn't think to tickle her till i was a block away!lol

the way a country treates it's servicemen is a reflection on the dignity, and honor of that country. i am touched by the love of america for her sons in uniform.

steve

Now THAT'S more like it.

I have to admit that this is something I admire greatly. (The feeling citizens have for people who do difficult jobs.) The way the rank & file servicemen were treated after and during Vietnam was a cancerous polyp on the anus of the national conscience. It's great to hear such positive experiences.

Cheers for that you two. I enjoyed reading them.

For me it's being able to drive all over the 48 states area in my big rig The great thing is no passport required to do it either It's nice bein out in the country away from all of the big city areas

I would say my favorite area is the southwest U.S. Sadly I don't see a lot of that area much anymore🙁

The answer is easy...........

....."Whats so great about America?" .......Bill Evans.....is the answer.Any one who has even a passing interest in American music needs to get on the road to Damascus, get converted, and go worship at the Holy Shrine of St William of Evans. Living proof, (if it was ever needed) that being a heroin addict and a coke head, need not lead you in to a life of crime and debauchery.......er.....well...actually, he is dead, but fuck me! what a player!
