do you all think that being ticklish is soley for the purpose of obtaining highly erotic pleasures (if it is, what a shame others are unaware of its unleashing powers!) or perhaps being ticklish serves as another bodily function?

Before anyone says it, I don't believe in that non-sense about tickling being a defence mechanism to warn us of bugs crawling on us for one second. Tickling is a gift that is here for our enjoyment.

If tickling is viewed by some as a form of defense mechanism as our good friend Novus stated, and I concur that that is a preposterous view, just how is giggling in hysteria serve as a way in defending ourselves, when in fact tickling often leaves us in a temporary state of vulnerabilty? ahhh, tickling can indeed be quite a fascinating paradox, so fascinating that at times I spend hours just musing on it 😛

Judging by the fact that chimps are also ticklish, and use it constantly as both a game and for eroticism, I'd say it's meant as a form of play... to be employed however you want to enjoy it.

A number of years back I read a study that theroized that tickling evolved as a feedback behavior to encourage contact between newborns and the parents. More and more research is coming to the fore hypothisizing that physical contact (bonding) between infant and adult is important in the development of the childs interpersonal skills and emotional structures. A different take....

The Scientific Truth

Tickling develops strong healthy love within a family.

As we mature and hit adolescence, that healthy emotional state and powerful loving force combine and we naturally leave our parents behind as ticklish boys and ticklish girls seek each other for dating, courtship, and general tickling opportunities.

Finally, we mature further and a ticklish woman attracts a tickling man who marries her. They spend the rest of their lives tickling each other.

If they become parents,,, (return to the beginning)

(If they don't become parents, the tickling continues till death do them part.)

It is important to remember that this is the scientific ideal for healthy emotional, personal, and interpersonal development. The closer you are to this development model, the better your emotional stability and character are likely to be. This model does not occur in all families, as is shown by the number of non-tickling marriages (which always have the overwhelmingly highest percentage of problems.)

The scientific truth has been clearly proven in every reliable study at major universities across the globe hundreds of times over: more tickling throughout life makes for a generally better person, better home, and better society.

i like it! no make that i love it!
i actually choose to be ticklish, it's fun, playfull, sexy, stress relieving, etc., adneausium. i wouldn't change for anything.

I think there are several different ways to explain tickling.

From Neurological studies we know that the tickling sensations travel along the same nerve routes as itching. That would support the view that the defense reflexes to a tickling touch (quite strong, as many ticklees know) originate in that notorious 'crawling bug' theory.

If tickling would exist solely for pleasure resons, why should we have developed defense reflexes like withdrawing of even fleeing from any tickling sensation? Makes no sense to me.

It's a bit different when it comes to the 'ler role: That's something designed for improving social contacts, probably developed for the reasons which Myriads stated. And of course, the same applies to the pleasure of the ticklee. So the social aspects obviously are combined with a more animalic reason.

Like for most things, there seem to be several reasons and more than one way to explain tickling. 🙂

sorry hal but you have old info there

tickling sensations are not on the same path ways as itch. itch, and pain are on the same path ways. i read that just last year, and talked with a neuro surgon about it. he said that study was known for the last couple years, and is correct.
a lot of the old ideas are being disproved all the time, and i'm glad of it.
