Share your current reading list with the rest of the board. Here's what I'm in the middle of at the moment:

Empire:The Rise and Demise of the British World Order and the Lessons for Global Power-Niall Ferguson

The World Was Going Our Way: The KGB and the Battle for the Third World-Christopher Andrew and Vasili Mitrokhin

i recently bought all the issues of Tales of the Asylum and am in the process of reading them... before that, i was reading James Michener's "Hawaii" over again... i read a diverse selection of books..depends on my mood... when i'm depressed and need really light reading? don't laugh, but i read my old nancy drew books. doesn't require concentration and is good to helpp me relax.

Lonesome Dove is fantastic, and if you haven't seen the Mini-Series, Isabeau, you best go find it somewhere. It's classic

Currently...

Brightness Reef, by David Brin
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Vol 2, by Allan Miller
Japanese for Today, author unknown
Magick, Book 4, by Aleister Crowley

League of Extraordinary Gentlemen's an excellent work. I actually think that if anything, 2's better than 1.

Excellent book! You going to read DaVinci Code as well before the movie comes out next month?

I read a lot at work, so I prefer fiction when I'm reading for pleasure:

Crusader's Cross, by James Lee Burke
The Pale Horseman, by Bernard Cornwell
The Bourne Ultimatum, by Ludlum
Country Wisdom & Know How (occasionally I read a little personal reference stuff too.)

I haven't read The DaVinci Code because I was just so annoyed by Angels & Demons. This might be just my problem though: I'm a scientist with some training in theology, and in A&D Dan Brown has both his scientists and his main character doing things that people with their training just wouldn't do. It jarred me right out of my suspension of disbelief every time I came across one of these spots, and finally I just put the book down.

If Code isn't as bad about that, I might be able to get into it. I normally enjoy conspiracy stories.

I read Angels & Demons and thought it was well written; The DaVinci Code is just all out offensive, I read about half the book and then through it in the trash.

Both books definately push limits on reality and theology. Seen as an attempt to portray reality, they would be tossed aside fairly quickly. Seen instead as the works of fiction that they are, I can relax and take them as is. My reason for liking them is that they challenged my faith. I enjoy reading things that contradict what I believe. They help me to redefine the things that are real for me. They also often help me to better appreciate what others believe, without necessarily agreeing.
