I am afraid to include football in the title as it may draw the wrong crowd, but are there any soccer/football fans out there?

I know there has to be a bunch but I have not noticed any good soccer threads here.

Being in the United States and being located near Seattle I am pretty big into the MLS, but I am interested in the big leagues worldwide as well.

Anyone else? I am hoping to get a good thread started to talk/debate on this great sport.

finally! massive tottenham fan here! you may of heard of us this season for raping the champions league. good times!!!

Leeds United  although a team not to popular with other supporters over here in England 😛

We've been in financial meltdown the last few years after living the dream and spending like no tomorrow, which saw us fall out of the premiership. It's been a hard road but it's looking much better.

Nice to see spurs having such a great champions leauge run but the Leeds lesson is always there to be learned.

I'm trying really hard to be a fan of the MLS, but it can be tough.

Barcelona is my team...the best club in the world for the past 5 years....

I agree tckleguy, the MLS is kind of sad, but at least it's a league 🙂

I'm not partial to one team worldwide either so...
Go Man U- for Georgie Best
Go Liverpool-for the young Michael Owen days
Go Barca- well for being Barca 🙂
Go Chelsea- for Drogba and Lampard
Go Blackburn- for the really young Eric Cantona days

Did you see the group that bought the Silverdome is trying to bring a team here? If they do I plan on supporting it for sure. Hopefully they will have a good showing at Ford Field for the Gold Cup matches in June.

At long last, a FOOTBALL thread 🙂 Nice to know there are other guys on here, who like this sport. As far as I'm concerned, I work as a sports journalist, so I try to be as objective as possible when doing my job, but in my personal life I am a fan of: Manchester United, Barcelona, Levski (Sofia) [that's a Bulgarian team], and of course-our national team. Having mentioned that, on Saturday I'm not working, and I'll be able to attend the Euro Championship qualifier between Bulgaria and Switzerland AS A FAN, and I'll be able to cheer properly for my team. Hope we win, or we are 100% out of the race...

I agree that the MLS is more of a bash each other up for 90 min and hope a goal slips in kind of league, but at least in Seattle we have an awesome atmosphere (Top 30 in attendance worldwide). That is what makes it so fun to be part of the MLS for me at least.

Outside of the MLS I would say my team is Porto. Hulk is all I have to say about that 😛. Never a more fitting nickname.

I think Barca are becoming everyones second team, I've never seen anything like it during my generations time in the game.

me neither they are scary. the way they just draw triangles with theyre passing all the way up the pitch...unstoppable. in a sick way i hopee spurs beat real madrid so we can play them. id be interested to see how few we can lose by!

I've watched games that were in Seattle and I agree, the atmosphere is fantastic. Every MLS needs a boistrous fan base like that.

I think especially for Americans one of the things that the average/passive notices are the crowds when watching a game in Europe. Soccer is hard to watch both live and on tv even for the most passionate fan, but when you can have and be involved in a fantastic non-hooligan crowd, that makes the entire experience something that a fan wants to be a part of again. Keep up the good work in Seattle!

Go Barca!

I recommend picking a European team and following them. It is too hard to become dedicated to a sport that has so little of a following and very little commercial support here in the U.S. I love soccer, but in the U.S. it will never break through and become on the the Big Four sports, mainly because lack of commercial breaks means less advertisement time. US sports fans are spoiled by fast-paced, high scoring, hard hitting type of games. They don't appreciate games that require patience, strategy, and low scoring.

In fact, because the following of soccer is so weak in the U.S., I refuse to root for the U.S. in the World Cup. I don't want to be like every other "Jump on the Band Wagon for a team you don't normally watch just because the U.S. is playing in the even", type of fans. I choose to support England because I am nearly 100% and I enjoy watching the Premier League.

There is the small matter of Wales vs England over here on saturday, unfortuantly I have to work though so that's quite the downer. Even as a proud welshman I fear what the score could end up being.

Out of interest what do you guys over in the states make of David Beckham and the Galaxy? Over here in the UK we get updates on him and how the Galaxy are doing, which is the closest to MLS we get. Quite a lot of us were obsessed with Freddie Adu at one point when he was at D.C. United but last I heard he was in Europe playing somewhere.

Over hear, nobody cares whatsoever about what Beckham is doing. Soccer is not covered by major sports networks, and most games don't get broadcasted throughout the nation. David Beckham is like Michael Jordan over in England, but in the U.S. nobody cares enough about soccer to pay attention to what he's doing.

Even after the comedy of them taking your friendly neighbours Aresenal out! :jester: I suppose you gotta be in it to win it though

I guess the Beckhams antics with the Cruises and Smiths are more talked about then the actual soccer side of the things then. Truth be told the the celebrity side of him became more dominant in this country than what he was doing on the pitch, which is why I think he moved out there. I'd be interested in taking an MLS game in one day.

Beckham when noticed in the US is generally not liked at all. For one, the MLS and Galaxy have spent a lot of money and time in bringing him over and while he has been an attraction in some ways, he has not really held up his end of the bargain like most people would have liked him to. Also the 'flop' has not been and will never be an accepted play in soccer in the US, even though it is a very important part of the game because of the advantage it gives your team and Beckham takes any opportunity he has to hit the ground to take advantage of his god like free kick abilities.

In a society that is all about Football and the likes, it is unacceptable to most here to watch a player fake a foul and even injury in order to 'cheat' the ref into giving them a free kick, and that is something that Baeckham's game is built on, especially now that he is older.

I know that it takes skill to do and that it is a huge advantage, but it will never be accepted here due to our culture and that really leads to Beckham not being liked in the US.

really?? im actually quite convinced wales are gonna turn us over. you have players who actually care about playing for your country. we havent had any since Beckham.

as for the barca thing the fact they beat the scum is part of the appeal! if we lose by less its another victory to add to getting further than them in the champions league!

this suprised me a bit as iv never really thought of Beckham as a diver but i suppose these days everyone does it. just part of the game now unfortunatley....

It's been a bleak few years, a lot of the senior squad members finished up at the same time and a lot of the youngsters simply aren't ready yet. Bale has been a massive source of optimism, however in the last few games I've seen even he's struggled as one man to drive us forward. He's out tomorrow of course, which doesn't help matters either.

Gareth Bale is the future of Wales, and a star-to-be, no question about that. It would be nice if you make us a favour and beat England, so if we beat the Swiss, we are back in the game. Unfortunately, I don't see neither Bulgaria winning, nor Wales 😀 In a couple of hours I'm going to the stadium, I'm really fired up for this game. But without Martin Petrov and Valeri Bojinov, and the retired Berbatov and goalkeeper Ivankov, ther is little if any chance of winning. Also, our defence has been so bad ever since Leicester boy Alex Tunchev was injured, and that has been some 2 years already. But, soon we will know what will happen 🙂

Good luck today and enjoy the game me40  Maybe we can help eachother out once the final whistles are blown. I'm stuck in work in a few hours time, will have to quiz customers if they know what the score is as the afternoon goes along.

As I predicted, we didn't win. The draw is also a bad result, as it leaves England and Montenegro 6 points ahead... It would be a miracle if we manage a playoff spot, I dare say we are out of he competition again 🙁 The game itself wasn't very interesting too, we were very poor up front, but the defence and goalkeeper were solid, which gives me some hope for the future 🙂
