I suspect that this is probably the wierdest post here

but am I the only one who get's irritable when people call the Enterprise NCC-1701 REFIT (trek films 1-3) the Enterprise A? It only is in trek 4-6, not 1-3.

or perhaps another meaningless question would be why does it bug me? Nah I'm just wondering if I'm the only one who gets uptight about this.

I so agree with you on this one nessie...all i have to say is WOW :weird: Could I interest you in a life sir? :tounge:

I think everyone has their little pet peeve in ways like this whether it has to do with science fiction or not. It was hard for me to get over the fact that people would argue about the super class star destroyers from Star Wars being larger than the eclipse class super star destroyers.

The official guide for vehicles and vessals (which I own) specifically says that the Eclipse was a new super star destroyer that was TWICE the size of the original super star destroyer models (approx. 17.5 kilometers long, which would make the Executor around 8.75 kilometers long). That also makes the Eclipse classes 10 times the size of standard imperial class star destroyers.

In terms of miles, the Eclipse was about 10 miles long, and the Executor about 4 and a half.

People had thought that because the Executor was Lord Vader's personal command vessal that it just had to be larger than the Eclipse (Emperor Palpatine's command vessal), or larger than a standard kuat drive yards super class star destroyer. And while this is a question in and of itself, and the Executor may be larger than the average super star destroyer, theres no way it was just as large or larger than an eclipse class destroyer.

The actual models from the movies indicate that the Executor was indeed a standard super class model destroyer, outfitted to be a dreadnaught, as opposed to being a cruiser by another name or a lesser battleship.

There was a scene in ROTJ where a standard imperial class star destroyer was patroling alongside the Executor, and by way of size estimates, its clear that the Executor is a standard super model, making it fall under the category and discription of the Eclipse in the guide book, which debunks the above suggestion that it would be larger than normal.

I've also seen blueprints of all of the imperial, alliance, and new republic vessals drawn to scale with one another. And the Eclipse is clearly the largest imperial capital ship.

And yet, despite these obvious facts, people liked to argue about it anyway, which was fine I guess, since it promoted interest in the ships themselves and ship/naval warfare and ship designs (one of the greater reasons I like Star Wars aside from the lightsaber duels and the jedi and sith orders).

Excluding Death Stars, possibly the Tarkin, possibly the Eye of Palpatine, and possibly the torpedo spheres. Not to mention that freakish space station where the Dark Troopers were created. And everybody neglects the poor Sovereign...

Speaking of geeky peeves...

I can't understand how Earth Federation - MS Gundam 0079 through 0093 - could produce so many RGM models in so little time.

Between september 0079 UC and january 0080 UC they managed to churn out at least three different ground variants [RGM 79 GM[G], RGM 79 GM D and RGM 79 GM G], and at least two space variants [RGM 79 RM E and RGM 79 GS]... and none of them even remotely resembled the "official" massproductive RGM 79 GM version.

...

I suppose I could try and follow Navel's advice.

/me goes and gets a life.

[Anybody feeling like forfeiting one's?]

Yes, excluding some. I was clear in mentioning conventional craft. While the Eclipse was by no means conventional and was intentionally made in an attempt to represent Palpatine's power, it is the largest imperial capital ship.

Death Stars, Torpedo Spheres and the like are of course larger, especially in diameter, but they are not conventional craft as you know.

I've also never heard of the Eye of Palpatine. What is that?

@ Kalamos- I'm sure you, like me, have a life. But I guess its fun to poke a joke at one's self.

I suppose another pet peeve is when people assume that because someone has a knowledge of something that goes beyond what is considered enough to undestand or grasp, that they somehow don't have a life, social or otherwise. That somehow a great ammount of time was taken up/is taken up to learn these things which are useless and impractical in reality (at least right now in this century however).

I have a photographic memory, and thats often misunderstood. I can absorb alot of information, which I'm guessing you and HDS can as well. Yay for us, woe to them, I suppose. 😛

Thanks. Too bad theres not a picture of this thing. What is it? A space station?

Details are vague. *Searches*

[font=Arial,Verdana,Helvetica]Eye of Palpatine
The specially-designed starship Eye of Palpatine was basically a huge dreadnaught hidden inside an asteroid-like shell. The moon-sized craft could travel hyperspace until it neared a target, then drop into normal space. It would then swing into the destination system as a piece of space debris. It automated firing controls could then unleash a huge gout of firepower, capable of destroying an entire planet. In overall length, the ship was larger than a Super-class Star Destroyer.
As part of the mission of the Eye, special stromtrooper squadrons were dropped on hostile worlds in the Outer Rim Territories and told to await pick-up by the new starship. They were never told what to expect, let alone that the Emperor Palpatine himself was the only personal holding all the cards.
When the Jedi Knights discovered Palpatine's plans for the Eye of Palpatine, they sent Callista and another Jedi to disabled the craft. Callista sacrificed herself to the ship's automated defenses as the other Jedi escaped. She then used the Force to lock herself into the computer's automated firing controls. In this position, she was able to counteract The Will of the ship and keep it from being reactivated by incoming Imperials by destroying any approaching ships.
Over the years, with Palpatine's involvement as Emperor and his death at Endor, the various stormtrooper groups died or were killed by indigenous life. Callista remained resident in the firing control section of the computer core.
When Luke Skywalker, Cray Mingla, and Nichos Marr went to the Moonflower Nebula, they activated the Eye's proximity alarms, and Callista fired on them, stranding them on Pzob. This somehow set off the Eye's seek-and-recover systems, and it wnet about its preprogrammed mission. However, it could only collect native life-forms, not the stormtroopers it should have. Various life-forms were then subjected to the Eye's brainwashing indocatrination and turned into stormtroopers. The brainwashing included the implanting of false images portraying the Jedi Knights as murderers and plunderers.

Sweet. But I still prefer the Eclipse. Too bad it didn't get much action. If there ever are any future Star Wars films, or that rumored tv series, they just HAVE to include at least one Eclipse destroyer sometime in the series.

This monstrosity of a ship just shouldn't be without. I'd also want to see this "Eye" too.

No, seriously...

Why all those mecha series *need* so hugely different variants anyway?

It is design-fest!

I could understand if we compared different series... Titans from Adeptus Titanicus can't possibly resemble Varitech Fighters from Macross...

But whyever a Commando is so different from an Anubi? And... why do we need different chassis anyway? Couldn't they just retrofit older mechs until they crumbled apart?

Weren't they stranded with remnants from the Star-League era?

Why the blasted Clans have to create widely different signature mechs? Is that some kind of fashion statement??

They are meant to do the same thing, so... whyever they don't look the same to begin with? Or... if they really are so different, why the game mechanics do not reflect their specialisation for a certain role/environment?

...

Mmm...

I *definitely* need a life. And a brainwash too.

Wonder if the Empire is still hiring...

I think then Kalamos it boils down to personal taste in machinery. Things may be similar but theres usually some distinguishing feature that makes them unique. And its usually this feature, attribute, or what have you, that the pilot, etc., is meticulous in pointing out or demonstrating.

By Mechwarrior/Battletech rules, many mechs sports similar payloads, yet differencies are mostly cosmetic.

So, my question is, is it just for the show?

Some players did complain; they were ignored in favour of streamlined game concepts.

It should be added that mecha-fans can't be too choosy, on PC systems.

It's either Mechwarrior or nothing.

Activision tried making a good game out of Heavy Gear, but they completely missed the mark, IMHO.

No, it's not about game engine, Heavy Gear 2 ran smoothly and all.

It was about game mechanics... They ditched fun for strict rule adherence! Where is the fun of aiming to the head, if the PC actually rolls for location placement anyway?

So, what's the point in piloting a mech over another?

...

Why is the RGM 79 GM G so different from the RGM 79 GM, which was derived from anyway, and was only a couple of months older than the G version?

...

The fact I had to buy both to see how different the models were shows I am funding Bandai and complaining over it.

Oh, and I plan to get the GM GS version too...

I guess there is no point then, its purely a preference to any minute detail there may be, even if its not a physically tangible difference (ie- this one is an older class and therefore more original and appealing). It could be that people prefer to use them in specific ways for specific mission profiles.

In Evangelion for example, Eva Unit 0 is often used for recon and vanguard, and also backup. Eva Unit 2 is purely for combat and the dispatchment of the Angels. Eva Unit 1 is a multi-purpose unit.

Although, I'm sure its different from what you're saying, since these three Evangelion units are technically different, in more ways than just the technological and physical, even though they can all perform the same roles basically.

Again, in cases where there would be no difference, I suppose even if the color were different that may lead people to choose that over another because they feel it suits them more.

I'm not sure of the game mechanics of what you're talking about though, so I won't pretend like I do. But from what you're telling me, it just seems like a trivial decision, but one that ultimately alot of people make.

Aside from trying to fit into this thread and coming up short, I'm sure, Ness, that there is something you can add thats just as discussable. 😀

Remember how we talked about Love Hina? Theres got to be something that you can come up with that truely makes you wonder and/or aggitates you.

It's all about style then.

And the fact that Zakus are just junk, and GMs *expensive* junk.

And these two GMs keep glaring at me, and boy, they sure colour-clash.

I really have to buy the GM GS. Or whatever the name.

Alright, I have some "geeky" Star Wars pet peeves.

1. How come in ROTJ The Executor is destroyed so easily? Ok, biggest ship that we had seen so far (besides the Death Star) gets it's bridge deflector sheild knocked out by a couple of fighters, gets hit on it's bidge tower by an out of control A-wing and goes spinning out of control and plunges into the Death Star. What the hell is that?! What?! That's it?! One hit on a tiny piece of a ginormous ship and it's all over but the shouting?! You know, the Empire loves to make things as big and scary looking as they possibly can, but when you come right down to it, anything that is that large and packs that much firepower should not blow up because of one hit (see also Death Star). Pretty pathetic.

2. The Death Star: This thing could destroy entire planets in one shot...but hey, nobody sneeze...this thing's liable to blow.

3. You know, anyone can build a big ship, but building a small and powerful ship is so much more effective (Millenium Falcon, The Sun Crusher, Ryo-ohki)

4. Why were the legions of the Emperor's "best troops" on Endor comanded by colonel Klink? "Oh NO! It's Teddy Bears attacking with sticks! Everyone throw down your laser guns and run for your lives! Hooooogan!"

1.) Because of the Death Star's gravity and the fact that even though it was a single fighter craft, it managed to capsize the lateral controls and auxilury power. Also, don't forget that more than just fighters were attacking the Executor. Admiral Ackbar ordered ALL ships to concentrate their fire on the Executor.

If you pay attention you'll notice that several Mon Calamari cruisers were closing in on the Executor, and while we could not see them firing upon it, no doubt they were, probably into the bridge with ion cannons (which as you know don't physically damage a ship, but weaken and shut down it's power systems) in the hope of further capsizing the larger ship, which definitely worked.

Finally, the bridge is essentially the head of the ship. Without it the rest cannot function. It was effectively decapitated with loss of power because of the destruction of the deflector shields and the incoming fire from the capital ships and fighter craft.

Despite being outmaned and outgunned the Rebel Alliance actually possessed some powerful ships in those calamari cruisers of theirs. Its duely noted even by reluctant imperial officers that the rebel cruisers are superior to the standard imperial destroyers, even though they do not have as many weapon batteries. They can last longer in a fight because of better shielding and shield regeneration.

As for the ease of the destruction, it was pure luck that there was system failure. Even without the shields the Executor could have continued fighting. What made this destruction possible however is that the agressive (albeit desperate) change of tactics caught Admiral Piett off guard and there was less time to react to multiple ships converging on his very command craft.

This wouldn't have been a problem with the Eclipse, which is just one reason of why its so damn powerful and virtually invincible. The shield generators were spread all over the ship and were themselves heavily fortified, as was the bridge and hull. Try as they might, even new republic fleets wouldn't have been able to do to the Eclipse what happened to the Executor. And with hundreds upon hundreds of weopon batteries for both capital ships and fighters, it would have destroyed any ship before it got too close to any potential weakspot. The ship was so huge and dwarfed all other ships like never before, just finding a weakspot may have been impossible and retreat was a more sound option (but even that was less likely because of the gravity well projectors on the Eclipse which prevent hyperspace escape). And even concentrated fire on one section of the ship would have been so insignifant as the firepower wouldn't have been causing enough damage and penetration of the armor and hull, and to such a small portion and area of the ship. Its like a fly biting a dragon. And this is not even considering the superlaser the ship had and that the Eclipse can hold complete wings of fighters, making for hundreds of fighters to be deployed, and just from this one ship alone.

2.) Yeah, but keep in mind with Death Star II it would have been invincible had it's shields been up without the aid of the shield generator on Endor. Let us not also forget that the Death Stars were originally outfitted to combat capital ships, and so are actually capable of doing that as well.

Seeing the obvious danger and weakness in the first design, it was greatly improved in many ways. The only way to have destroyed the second Death Star was to do it when it was still under construction.

3.) Yes, and in the case of the Rebel Alliance, they had to swing this way as they just didn't possess the funds, might, or material to create large fleets and so had to rely on starfighters in the early portions of their galactic efforts. As a result, the bulk of their strength lies in their fighters, which are vastly superior to the Empire's (at least until Tie Interceptors and Tie Defenders were being produced). Even then, the Rebels maintained the edge.

4.) I actually think Palpatine may have just been saying that in order to further fill Luke's mind with doubt, uncertainty and dispair.

"Your overconfidence is your weakness."- Luke

"Your faith in your friends is yours."- Palpatine

While I'm sure some of his best troops were there, I think it was mostly an intimidation factor. Also, to put it even more plainly, them just acting unprofessional by falling for simple Ewok tricks is a plot device to ensure victory for the good guys. Otherwise, we knew what would have happened. 😛

I understand your pet peeves though, but its interesting to comment on them.

Oh lots of things bug me 😛 But we seems to be talking about what bugs us in movies/sci-fi etc and I dont think I have much there.
Though I did just finish book 12 of Love Hina, now that you bring it up, and it bugs me that it's almost over. I've been very slow about finishing the series cause I don't want it to end 😛 My husband reads books in about 10 seconds flat and it irrtates the hell out of me. How can you enjoy a book when you're speeding through it like that...it's like watching a movie in fast-forward.

Vlad -

Re: Palpatine's boast on the troop quality of the Endor regiment...your argument seems very sound, as we know that Palpatine's finest troops are recruited to be Royal Guards.

Oh, btw...just a quick question...did you ever hear how Palpatine punished the designer of Death Star 1? (this tidbit is found in one of the novels).
