It isn't any easier in America in small town or small cities. The big cities, however, have a much higher tolerance for other people's sexual orientation, religion, race etc. So those places where you can be open about it here are huge cities...and they don't reflect the attitudes of most of the rest of the country.

I live in Devon, England where life, apart from on Friday and Saturday nights in Torquay and Exeter, is on the whole quite quiet. Lots of small villages and farms. Americans just have found ways to be more vocal is all. Small groups that share interest in something have the internet now to learn more and to set meetings up, such as NEST. That is all that is. The "normals" just can't shut you up via peer pressure as easy now.
