Question for sports fans:

What was your favorite .. negative event.. . or circumstance to happen to a team you dislike?

I've already gone through my favorite games of agony for teams I dislike, so for me, one circumstance and event comes to mind.

The 2007 Mets Collapse. Baseball fans know the one I'm referring to.. where the Metropolitans blew a seven game NL East division lead, with seventeen games to play, and finished one game behind the Phillies, and resulted in the Mets being eliminated from post season play.

Even more satisfying.. was that Tom Glavine.. who I despised during his years with the Mets, pitched a terrible game in Game Number 162 of the 2007 season, resulting in Glavine, and the Mets, having their asses kicked by the visiting Florida Marlins.

So that's the question: Favorite negative event, game.. or circumstance.. to happen to a team you dislike.

Lets see here,

Dallas Cowboys - Their annual chokes in December, though specifically its a tie between the Redskins defeating the Cowboys on Sunday Night Football to win the NFC East this past season, or the Philadelphia Eagles obliterating the Cowboys 44-6 a couple years ago.

Pittsburgh Penguins - Getting blitzed by the Boston Bruins mere weeks ago.

Those sound very cool, Skins.

Another hilarious circumstance for a team I have issues with.

Everyone ranks on my Atlanta Braves for their "Fourteen straight divisional titles, and only one World Series win". Well, I just loved the 2004 Yankees ALCS choke, where the Yankees accomplished what no team in baseball had ever done before, and blew a three games to none lead.. by losing four straight games to the Boston Red Sox. I found that completely hilarious, as it showed the now late George Steinbuyer, and the Yankees fans, that a two hundred million dollar payroll doesn't automatically mean a World Series title., or that a team that spends that much money.. can't still have the worst collapse in baseball playoff history.

Normally I prefer to cheer along with the success of my own team, rather than gloat at the misfortunes of others - even of teams I despise. That's not to say I don't enjoy both, though... :evilha:

Any time when Montreal is sent out of the Stanley Cup playoffs is certainly a time of jubilation for me; I'd rather they make it there than miss it entirely though, so they don't end up with any good draft pick either. The best of two worlds, you could say!

In other words, you can be certain I had a great time during Ottawa's playoff run this year, although I care little for the Sens otherwise.

I also loved how Malkin practically fled the country when he came to play in the NHL during the Transfer Dispute, but that was more a matter of cheering him on personally. I don't particularly dislike his old team, Metallurg Magnitogorsk (even though they tried to force him to stay), but I have a hard time sympathizing with the Russian league in general - for reasons that would be a bit off topic for this thread.

Very interesting, Generic, and thanks.

I too like to cheer on the success of my own team, the Braves, but I also take satisfaction in the misfortunes of teams I dislike.

Careful Mitch, you might be walking on eggshells with this topic. Seems I have discovered that if you disagree with a certain team or cheer for your own on this particular forum, you are leading yourself into being 'ignored' (what a joke) by certain members.

I thought this was a sports forum to engage discussions and talk about your favorite sports teams, or teams you like or dislike.

Seems I was wrong.

"42" - the number of Dodgers losses by the All Star game. I stand by my pre-season prediction.

Feel free to "ignore" me too Mitch, if you like. However, you seem very mature in your posts. I could insult the Braves all day long and you would still be open to discuss the issue (and of course insult my teams too- lol) But again, I thought that was the purpose of sports forums.

Crap i cant believe i forgot his name, some Jr kid. He made a pretty nice sliding catch in center field and ended up barehanding it. Chip Carey screamed "Oh My! This has Gotta be our year!!!!" I think the cubs lost 100 games that year

That and also the infamous Brant Brown fly ball drop and Ron Santo just screaming "Nooooo! No!"

I loved it when Kevin Gross pitched a shutout victory against the hated jints on the last day of the 1993 season. This Dodger victory, combined with a Braves win earlier that day, meant that the hated jints went home and the Braves advanced to the NLCS. (Both were in the NL West at the time.)

To fans of the hated jints:

Repent before you die or The Big Dodger in the Sky will send you to Hell. :firedevil

I remember that game well, mils. I was very happy that day.

Laugh, I wont ignore you, even if you said the Braves suck. The Braves are a baseball team, bash them all day long, I don't care. As long as you're civil to me personally, you will never get ignored.

Thanks Mitch, at least one member here understands the purpose of a sports forum. I've always been civil and regardless of how much i might insult your team it is never personal towards you. Some people just don't get that.

I like it how the Oakland Raiders always seem to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Yeah, I know they outdo my Chiefs two or three Super Bowls to one, but they seem to implode at the most inappropriate times.

Oct 3, 1951 "the Miracle of Coogan's Bluff". (google it)

Throughout the first half of the season, the Dodgers stayed in first place by a large margin. By August 10, they were 12 1⁄2 games ahead of the Giants and 14 1⁄2 games ahead of the Phillies, and as a result they were already looking ahead to facing the New York Yankees in the 1951 World Series; the Associated Press commented on their dominance, saying that "unless they completely fold in their last 50 games, they're in."

The Giants won 16 straight games from August 12 to August 27, cutting their deficit from 12 1⁄2 games to six.

Given the present time, one would think instead of devoting all their big dollars to pay losers, they would spend more on ballpark security. Then again, it's the Dodgers we're talking about. My thoughts and prayers are with you Bryan Stow.

^ The post above refers to my favorite negative outcome for the hated jints in my lifetime.

If we are allowed to post about times before we were born, then I would have to say that Merkle's Boner, described by the New York Times as "censurable stupidity on the part of player Merkle," is my favorite. It caused the hated jints to lose the 1908 pennant to the Cubs. The full story may be found here:

To fans of the hated jints:
How does it feel to know that some teams have blown pennants due to bad pitching, and some teams have blown pennants due to bad fielding, and some teams have blown pennants due to anemic offense, but the hated jints are the only team to give away a pennant due to sheer stupidity? :rowfull:

Yes,mils. I guess we can use times when teams blew it before we were born.

In my case, the Metropolitans were only in existence for eight seasons before I was born, and had won the World Series the year before I was born, of course. The first instance of them really blowing it was in 2007, when they blew the seven game NL East lead with seventeen games left.

A baserunning mistake by a rookie. Wow. That is amazing. We'll probably never see one of those again in our lifetime. If only I could have seen it in person. Just wow. I'm still at a loss for words. That has to be the most single rarest sight to ever witness in a game of baseball - a mistake by a rookie who was told by an umpire the game was over. There were so many different accounts of what actually happened how do Dodgers fans possibly keep up with them all? Just wow.

Future Hall of Fame umpire Bill Klem said Merkle's Boner was "the rottenest decision in the history of baseball". When it comes to matters of baseball I would be more inclined to go with the word of a HOF umpire over the NY Times.

Five years after the play, Merkle admitted that he had left the field without touching second, but only after umpire Emslie assured them that they had won the game. In 1914 O'Day said that Evers' tag was irrelevant: he had called the third out after McGinnity interfered with the throw from center field. Future Hall of Fame umpire Bill Klem said Merkle's Boner was "the rottenest decision in the history of baseball"; Klem believed that the force rule was meant to apply to infield hits, not balls hit to the outfield.

If there was anything "stupid" about the play, it was the indecision from mass confusion - and also an umpire assuring a player - a rookie - the game was over when other officials seemed to have disagreed.

At any rate, the Cubs went on to win the series. If you are going to lose, at least lose to the eventual champions.

As for the present, I would say 2011 had some great comebacks when it comes to pennant races.

My thoughts and prayers are with you Bryan Stow.
