Sports trash talk

Here is something all of us sports fans can discuss. The "art" of trash talk. My recent Lakers threads got me thinking. Isn't being a fan of sports INCLUDES trash talking?

Think about it. Sports is very emotional, no matter which sport it is. Fans "live" and "die" with their favorite teams. When someone disagrees with their team, then "debates" arise and passion pours out. All of us red-blooded males (women too!) participate in these debates. Much like politics, people get very emotional and sometimes feeling get hurt.

Now, what is wrong with trash talk? Sometimes (I know I'm included), a fan will trash talk with so much emotion, people get hurt feelings and the original trash talker is made out to be a villian. Why? That's what sports are. Plus, wouldn't you just LOVE to rub it into the loudmouth's face when his/her team loses? There is just something very satisfying about life when you can finally make that loudmouth shut his/her piehole for a change. The sports forum was created on this TMF to give us sports fans an outlet to discuss sports. When have you ever seen "calm" sports talk on a regular basis? I look around on this forum and man, things get awfully quiet when everyone is calm and cordial. The P&R forum is filled with passionate posts. It's the nature of the beast. This forum should be the same.

Even though he was a complete ass, you had to admit, Slavertickler keep things interesting in the wrestling threads. It keeps things moving. This forum sometimes gets quiet and it shouldn't. This is sports dammit!!

I do want to give a shot out to certain posters who are diehards of their team and let everyone know about it. Of course me, but how about Kis? She is one of the few women in the sports forum that mixes it up with us guys. I can't stand Cleveland, but you know what? I will give her lots of love because she is a fan of Cleveland and will stand by them. (Lebron and Shaq will choke it up..hahahahahahahahaha)

Ticklefiend? Man, this guy loves his Cowboys and I remember when everyone kept getting on him for the Terrell Owens signing. He stayed with his team though.

Ticklingfeet4fu? Man, we have gone heads up for years. We will probably never agree, but the trash talk is always fun.

Now we have guys like Trez, Slacker and others who love those darn Steelers. I can't forget about Flock of Seagulls either. This is a shot out to all of us. Let's keep the trash talk going. It FUELS this forum. Yeah, there will be times where feelings will be hurt, but who cares? Ever read the messageboards on ESPN.com? Man, those people are brutal. I have seen crazy posts on a High School football site. This is what sports is. We talk trash.

Why not keep it going?

I personally love trash talk as a fan, but i do think your view on trash talking depends on what team you root for. Being an all Pittsburgh team fan (especially my Steelers) i find it easy to trash talk about football and hockey since my teams have great history and compete every year. But when it comes to baseball i couldnt trash talk a highschool team because my Pirates are one of the worst franchises in sports and havent had a winning season since 1991!

look at the list of people you threw shoutouts to we are fans of the Steelers, Lakers, Cowboys and Cavs respectivly. All those teams either have a rich history or on the top of their game now. I still trash talk when the Steelers are having a bad year because i know it wont last long and ill defend them no matter what but you would be hard pressed to find a fan of lets say the Bengals or Lions doing the same. You hear from them if/when their teams are good but no other time.

I just think it all comes down to who your team is, different cities have different love and respect for their teams and those fans are the trash talkers

You are correct. You won't see to many crappy teams fans talk as much because what could they really say? But, even a Bengals fan can talk trash about Cowboys issues and such. For example, the whole T.O. era can include people from all teams. You just need to pick your battles.

I agree but even with issues like TO you dont see too many of the bottom feeder teams talking a lot of trash. Buts its not just the bad teams its the bandwaggon fans too. The Bears fans are the worst bandwagon jumpers ive ever seen they love the Bears when they are doing good but they are the first too jump on them when they arent so hot. Cant stand people who dont stand up for their team in any situation

I definitely agree with that! Either stand by your team no matter what, or just don't "jump" on. For example, remember in the 90's when it seemed like everyone was a Bulls fan? Where are they now? Some of them were the biggest trash talkers ever. Now, you can't find them...

Yeah Chicago "fans" are really good for that. Like you said stand up for your team always or dont claim to be a fan

I give flock trash all the time about the cowboys, being a steelers fan i feel its my duty to lol. But gotta hand it to him boys havent won a playoff game in 15 years and have a choke artist at qb but he stands by his team always

I'm a 49ers fan and I know we sucked for the last few years. But we have a more recent playoff win than they do. Now, if we can only get our 6th ring. We will be the first to 7!

I definently have no problems with trash talk. I don't think anyone should expect to interact with fans of other teams without trash talk. I say bring it on. There's nothing I like more than to go back and forth with someone who has something negative to say about America's Team.

Not a Cavs fan, but they're gonna win soon. Next season seems likely.

As far as Dallas is concerned, I'll admit that I'm not as confident as I was the last two seasons. It's just no telling what they'll do this season. They could go 7-9 or they could make it to Miami. And lets not forget that Super Bowl XLV will be played at their new stadium. Don't think for one second that Jerry Jones won't be doing all he can to have Dallas be the only team to play the SB at home.

I'm guilty of sports trash talk. As most people know, I despise the New York Mets. I used to have a friend when I was a teenager, who was a Mets fan, during the days when they were good in the 1980s, and my Braves were bad. Usually I could only get on him about individual games, when the Braves would win. One early morning, after the Braves had beaten the Mets at the old Shea Stadium the night before, I rang his phone about 8am in the morning. He was up, and my greeting to him was: "The Mets Lost, The Mets Lost, The Mets Lost". His reply to me was: "Fuck You, Fuck You, Fuck You". After that, we decided to become more respectful when our individual teams lost or won.

My father is a Yankees fan, and I taunted him in 2001 and 2003 when the Yankees lost the World Series

I dont care if someone goes off on me about the Braves losing an individual game or series, even in the postseason. What I dont like, is when they make it personal. I've posted about my assistant before. He's a major league moron. He will razz me about the Braves, and then will say something like "Well, the Braves suck, so now, because your team is doing bad, your girlfriend is probably going to cheat on you too". Stupid. What the hell does a sports team doing bad or good, have anything to do with how one's personal life goes? The year the Braves won the World Series, 1995, was one of the worst years of my life, because my grandmother died. This year, the Braves are playing well, and my mom has lung cancer. No correlation, moron.

Sports taunting, absolutely. Personal attacks because of sports teams doing bad. No.
