This afternoon, at about 425pm Eastern, a routine pop up at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas, ended the 90th loss of the season for the Atlanta Braves. The announcers said a few closing words, and then the 2008 season for the Atlanta Braves came to an end. As we baseball fans know, the Braves did not have a good season in 2008. After the game was over, I channel surfed to other games for a few minutes, and then said to myself "God, I'm not going to see my Braves again until April 6, 2009 in Philadelphia. Six months, and one week. That seems like an awfully long time.
Granted, many, many other baseball seasons have ended since I've been a fan, for the last 25 years. From 1991 to 2005, the Braves always played an extra week, at least, beyond the regular season, and sometimes, into the wee hours of an early morning in late October. Each year, there was a feeling of emptiness when the season ended. This year, seems different, maybe because at the beginning of the season, I, along with many other Braves fans, thought the team would be going back to the playoffs. Now, I sit here tonight, thinking "No Chipper at bats until next April in Philly. No Mike Gonzalez to save games. No Brian Mccann to hit homers, no muted sounds of the Tomahawk Chop Chant at Turner Field 81 nights, it's just.. silence. "
Do other fans feel this way at the end of their favorite sports seasons, whether it be baseball, hockey, basketball, or football? I know I can watch the postseason for the next four weeks, and I likely will, at least somewhat, and the official end of baseball season may not be until four weeks from today, but yet, it feels like a loss.
Tonight, I dont have a good feeling. My Boys Of Summer are gone, not to return until next April.
I'm sad.
