STAR WARS: Leia's parents

Call this an educated guess Dave, but is Padme's death arranged by Palpatine to manipulate the emotions of Anakin so the Son of the Suns will join the dark side?

All I know....

Is that, for the last few months or so, I have been seriously drowning myself in Star Wars lore, especially the comics/novels....

Part 3 of the Han Solo trilogy, and Part 3 of the Bounty Hunter Series:Hard Merchandise, were EXTREMELY well written, and explained quite a bit....

I'm not so much interested in the Post Jedi storyline, as much as I love the Pre Phantom Menace-ROTJ storylines, and the little stuff that happened in between the movies....

I won't apologize for this comment, and I know most of you will get their female 'lers ready for action, but I honestly find the character of Luke Skywalker to be a spoiled, whiny prissy ass....

Watching the three SW movies over again, it is obvious....

He whines at Owen, he whines at Yoda, he whines at Ben, he whines at Vader....

But the other characters are very interesting, such as Vader, Han, and Chewie, and of course, Boba Fett....

I'm becoming a SW geek.....

I guess it's not so bad....

LOL

And just for the record, I really couldn't stand Star Trek either....

I'm looking forward to SWIII, as it must sew up so many loose ends that lead into part IV....

It has to be said there's a lot of very poor writing in some of the extended universe novels that are set after ROTJ, but it's well worth tracking down anything Timothy Zahn wrote. He introduced what is still, to my mind, one of the best villans the SW universe has seen in Thrawn, we got a Luke that wasn't a whinning wimp (no, seriously) and most importantly used the 'bit players' well.

So does Padme die giving birth to the twins? Or do you think she was present on Aldaran when it was blown to bits by the Death Star?

In defence of Luke Skywalker...

... there are two mitigating factors people might consider. Firstly there's that during ANH and ESB he's only in his late teens/early twenties and is hardly the Jedi he turns out to be. He's supposed to be that way because it shows his learning curve. One of the biggest changes I noticed in ROTJ from the first two, was how different Luke was. Between the end of ESB and the start of ROTJ there's a hell of a transformation in him.

The second one is that the actor who played him wasn't a particularly good one; nor were choreography and effects as good as they are today. When Vader tells Luke that he'll try and turn Leia to the dark side, Luke loses it completely, storms out of the shadows and beats Vader into a pulp with a devastating display of lightsaber ability, showing some of the most aggressive and attacking moves in existence. But judge the swordfight between Mark Hamill and David Prowse against the amazing display put on by Euan McGregor and Ray Parkes in TPM. Hamill and Prowse look slow, clumsy, laboured and bloody tired by comparison. I get the impression that in the "actual Star Wars universe" Luke Skywalker is a lot harder a man and a lot more dazzling a sabre-ist than Mark Hamill was capable of portraying.

P.S. Another thing that was never supposed to happen was Luke wailing like a caned schoolgirl as he fell down the Cloud City core shaft. For some reason Lucas added that in the special edition. That, Greedo firing at Han first in the Mos Eisely cantina and that stupid frigging beak on the Sarlacc were the worst things about the special editions.

I doubt it's either of those. Palpatine wants Anakin on his side because of Anakin's holy status and singularly immense Force sensitivity. I would guess that he engineers a situation where Padme is killed and Anakin goes bonkers and loses it, culminating in his fateful fight with Kenobi. I would further speculate that Anakin will then be manipulated into a fight with Tyrannus/Dooku as a final "rite of passage" to becomming a Sith. With the junior Sith Lord (Tyrannus) dead, Anakin would be free to assume the mantle and become Darth Vader.

Actually, having said that I think the fight with Tyrannus will come second. I think Anakin will already be in the armour for that one.

P.S. I saw a photo of Hayden Christianssen heavily made up the other day. He's wearing the black armour of Vader, his head is shaved, his skin blanched white and there are ugly, livid scars all over his naked skull. (A younger version of what we see at the end of ROTJ actually.) I cannot wait until next May!

Dave, if you have any spoilers at all, please let me know as I love to know in advance. I actually like surprises being spoiled. 🙂

as much as I was disappointed with TPM, the lightsabre duel in that film was fantastic!

Cool, thanks BigJim. That explanation makes sense. I can't wait till next May either!! 😀

Agreed, 'tis why I like the Luke of (some) of the post-ROTJ books, gives him a chance to be the Jedi rather than the Padawn.

Hey, don't be disin' the Hamill man, that's Cockknocker you're talking about there, show some respect! 😀 Actually, I'd kinda argue the fact that we CAN see Luke go through these distinct changes in the three films is a good enough indication Hamill is a decent actor. The problem as I see it with the Sabre fights was that they just didn't have the technology back then to pull it off. When you look at the behind the scenes stuff for TPM virtually all of the sabre fights are done against blue screen (so no problem with working around the physical set) and didn't Lucas use digital tools to move actors closer together in the scene? Plus of course you had the kick-arse Ray Park playing Maul and he wasn't wearing a honking big suit of metal into the bargain.

Of course the ironic thing with this is that it'll actually play out nicely in the end. All the Jedi we see in the new films are fully trained and can do all the fancy stuff without so much as breaking sweat. In ROTJ Luke, while a 'full' Jedi (well, at the very end he is anyway) hasn't had the benefit of a lifetime of training and the constant development of his skills in the police role of the Jedi pre-empire. As for Vader, when we get to the original films he's getting on a bit, and it'd make sense if he was relying more on the funky force grip o' choking death than his sabre skills, especially if there are very few chances to use those skills when he's not making Gungan Sushi.

Now the thing I'm really looking forward to in Episode 3 isn't finding out all the big plot points, or the clone wars or anything else on an epic scale. No, it's the death of Mace Windu because you just KNOW that Sam Jackson is gonna go out with style!

If he's killed by a teenage Boba fett, then I am going to personally piss in George Lucas's face! 😡

A decent actor certainly, but not a great one. Not as good as Hayden Christianssen I woul say, and he's a long way from Oscar material as we know.

And yes, Luke was an exponent of Style 6 (make do and mend) lightsabre fighting. The type used by Jedi in the old days who were too busy to be arsed developing a proper style. Had a variety of moves, as Luke does Form 4 at the start of his seconds duel with Vader, drops back to form 3, then finishes off with the uber-devastating Form 5.
