"You are now about to witness the strength of street knowledge" - Dr. Dre
I have seen this movie twice, and without a doubt, this is one of the best movies of the year. For3 straight weekends, it has topped the box office. No one expected that. I am damn proud that it has done so well. I had friends work on the movie set itself. The fact that two of the original members, Ice Cube and Dr. Dre produced it, you know it was going to be done right
I remember when N.W.A. first hit the scene. The city I grew up in, neighbors Compton, and I was in High School. It was crazy back then because we all kept saying "They re CUSSING in records? Wow!!!" You had the great beats and lyrics and you got hooked., A lot of their songs were hilarious stories of what they see, but also stories of the harsh environment. The song "Fuck the Police" was a smash hit as it helped bring to light the brutality of police profiling. All these incidents you see today are exactly what was going on back in the 80s and way before that too. The only difference between then and now is there are cameras everywhere.
When a rap group can get the Federal government to make comments about them, then you know you made an impact. Funny how people claim "freedom of speech!" is a right, until a group of black men demonstrate their freedom of speech and everyone (government and certain segments of the population) wants to censor them.
Whether you like them or not, the members had tremendous talent. Dr. Dre is arguably the best music producer alive today, Ice Cube is a brilliant lyricist and has made himself well known through acting as well. Eazy-E had that voice and really was like a "class clown" while MC Ren and DJ Yella also had tremendous rap and recording skills respectively.
The movie chronicles them as a group with all their major points being discussed. From their founding, to their explosive popularity, to Ice Cube leaving, to Dr Dre leaving, to their reconciliation and then Eazy's death from AIDS, the acting was very well done, and it brought back memories of that time.
I recommend EVERYONE to go see this movie. It is VERY WELL DONE.
