From a conversation that began in this thread: http://www.ticklingforum.com/showthread.php?t=180578
On the subject of foot fetishism, a website has written: "Rate of foot fetishism is mainly increased when there is increase in sexually transmitted diseases and AIDS."
LOL, that's not what they meant.
I found the source of this quote: http://www.ammonsscientific.com/c.php?f=UjExSkEwNTk4XzAwMjIxNw==
Giannini, James A. et al. (1998) 'Sexualization of the female foot as a response to sexually transmitted epidemics: a preliminary study,' Psychological Reports, vol. 83, iss. 2, pp 491-498
They're saying that whenever there are lots of STD's going around, people tend to focus on areas of the body that can't get them sick.
Here are some quotes from the article:
"The focus apparently coincided with each of the first three epidemics and disappeared with each epidemic's subsidence, usually after 30-60 years," (491).
"This new fetish was looked upon by churchmen of the day as a form of degeneracy as Europe slipped from the idealized aspects of Medieval love into the adulterous aspects of High Gothic courtly love," (492).
"The use of the foot was seen by some as a safe-sex alternative to genital intercourse," (493).
"In reviewing the historical past, it was inferred by the authors that a relationship existed between epidemics of venereal disease and the emergence of a transient, culture-wide foot fetish," (ibid).
It's an interesting theory, but I actually like their alternative explanation better:
"It may alternatively be suggested that the foot represents a symbolic form of feminine power, allowing women to simulataneously control and distance themselves from sexual intimacy," (496).
"It is note-worthy that of the four historical periods examined, all except the nineteenth century were periods of relative female emancipation. Certainly every Western culture has emphasized foot-kissing as a sign of respect and obeisance," (497).
Also, the authors state that they weren't studying foot fetishism explicitly:
"In the current study, back issues of the eight largest mass circulation pornography magazines in the United States were reviewed. Fetish oriented magazines...were excluded so as not to load the data," (495).
"The number of foot-oriented photos [in these magazines] has literally grown exponentially over the years," (496).
So in other words, this is about non-kinky people suddenly finding feet erotic. Which means even if this gives you AIDS, we true perverts are safe. 😀
