Subtitled vs. Dubbed

Wow. That's horrible. I saw a animated version of the Watchmen (they took the pictures from the comic and slightly animated them) and one man was the narrator and voices of the characters, even the women. It was really hard to pay attention to the storyline, but the watchmen is cool enough that I got through it.

Hurray for Europe! :cool2:

🙁

i perfer dubbed i dont like to read subtitles i realy cannot read them that fast and i cannot enjoy the movie if i am sitting there reading subs

Subtitles every day all day, dubbing usually makes me crazy; too distracting.

I love subtitles. I actually watch everything with them on at all times. Usually bugs most people lol. :doublethrust:

Dubbed

That's the best way to watch Japanese science fiction movies 😛

Live action: subtitled

Anime: dubbed -- I just can't stand Japanese voices *cringe*

When I watch anime, the boys all tend to have really squeaky, girl voices and they just irritate me. Listen to Goku in DBZ and you might understand what I mean.

No offense meant. 🙂

lol no worries just finding out. I agree with dubs on some occasions. Sometimes girls/guys sound like they are still waiting for the puberty fairy to pay them a visit.

Subtitles for me.

Crouching Tiger/Hidden Dragon is great with the emotion you get from the actors voices in Manderan with subtitles. The English dubbing of Chow Yun Fat voice makes his emotions seem totally different. Actually, in that movie I never understood why they didn't dub with their own English voices instead of dubber voices...

Euphoricy

Yes, I agree, Goku does have an annoying voice!

Like most everyone has already stated , I prefer subtitles to dubs ... even for the animated movies. Though I also agree that dubs for 'toons are way more tolerable & I don't really have a problem viewing/listening to 'em that way.

I think Mephistopheles kinda made reference to it earlier , too , but the only time I enjoy a dubbed version of anything is if I'm in a really silly mood , the movie is really bad , & I'm w/some friends who also want to have a few laughs.

... & yes , being drunk helps.

Actually, Goku's Japanese VA is really good for the role.

The reason most American's are turned off by the Japanese voice of Son Goku is because, unlike in America, Goku's voiced by a woman over there. Whereas we started the franchise with Dragon Ball Z (meaning we started near the halfway point of the story, and as a matter of fact the Saiyan Saga was supposed to be the beginning of the end, whereas for us it was just the beginning), the Japanese started from the beginning. And in the beginning, Goku was a child. This is important, because in America, Funimation looked for someone to voice a large muscular man (which is what Goku was at the beginning of DBZ). In Japan, Toei Animation looked for someone to voice a little boy (which is what Goku was in the beginning of Dragon Ball).

But I like both VA's. Masako Nozawa has always voiced the Japanese Goku quite well, and Sean Schemmel has really come far as the American Goku.

SUBTITLES. EVERYTIME. NO. DUBBING.

Because you can't appreciate the work the actor's do when you have a lazy day-player voice-over actor working for scale going over it. Plus, I used to work at a movie theater and I always hated those fucking redneck dipshits who wouldn't sit through Hero because "I didn't come to a movie to READ." How fucking ugly American can you get? If other countries have to watch our movies with subtitles, then we should watch theirs with subtitles too.

With 2 exceptions: Ghost in the Shell & Mad Max

I like watching Ghost in the Shell with or without; the only anime I really do that on, otherwise I always stick to Japanese; I always like it when Motoko says "'bout fucking TIME it ran out!" because it sounds harsher than it does in Japanese.

Mad Max is in English, but in 1979, most American audiences hadn't been exposed to thick Australian accents yet, so an American overdub was done...I actually really like it because some of the characters have more energetic and intimidating voices in the dub, as well as some cooler sound cues.
