Technical Question

My boyfriend has a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop and the keyboard makes this annoying clicking sound everytime you press a key. I thought it was sticky keys, but it's not because I have them turned off.

Even with the volume muted, it still makes the noise.

How can I try to fix this?

annie the hollywood brother might recommened you getting a new keyboard. you can go to a staples or a local store and just get the cheapest desktop keyboard they have. this will plug into your boyfriend and your's laptop. once this operation is done will not only not hear the original keyboard make noise but if the new keyboard is quiet then it will be more peaceful and keep you and your loved one in a great hollywood brother tickling mood

I think it's be kinda neat to have a keyboard that sounded like old-style typewriters* used to when you tap on it. I wonder if they make something like that?






*I don't imagine there's many here who even know the "clickity-clack" sound I'm referring to, unless perhaps from old movies maybe...

I do, I do.
I used to type my stuff on an Olivetti typewriter, when it was cutting edge, back in late '80s/early '90s.

So, seriously. Not to rot the original question posed at the top of the thread, but there's GOTTA be a program out there that will allow your keyboard strokes to sound like the keys of an old school typewriter. I refuse to believe there isn't. And if there isn't, there should be. :snob:

When I first got published on something semi-national, I was already using my pc.
Maybe this very same kb... fairly quiet, weren't it for me hammering away at keys like a dwarven smith...

The "plug a kb" idea was sound, if roundabout.
Maybe they can't spare the room or money for whatever reason.

I am not sure about the clicking thing though.
Is it a system sound, or is the kb naturally noisy, so it gives off a clear "click" even when system's off?

I'm pretty sure it's a system sound. It's an electronic "click" not the normal one that you hear when typing.

In Windows XP (and probably other versions), try Control Panel-> Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices-> Change the Sound Scheme. It should allow you to decide which system sounds you want to hear.

I used an ancient portable Olivetti for years and only discarded it after I acquired an electronic typewriter 😀

Dell's BIOS has a setting in it for audible keyboard click. I own a Latitude D600 with the same setting. When you turn it on, watch for a message that says...

"Press x to enter setup"

Or the like. Press that key, then read CAREFULLY the instructions to navigate around until you find a setting for audible keyboard sound, keyboard click sound, or something that sounds like it could not be anything else.

DO NOT change any other setting. These settings are hardware-level and some are non-reversable. Some will destroy your data. If you CANNOT find a setting that has to do with the key-click sound, JUST TURN IT OFF!

Don't do anything! Just turn it off! Hold down the power button for five seconds and it's off.

I make it sound like it's a giant deal, but I just want to make sure that you won't see options and start changing them. I've had too many friends who go and change BIOS settings and fry their computer because they changed some option for their hard drive or video card.

It's not a difficult thing if you show some intelligence. So far you seem a superbly intelligent person, AnnieHall. But I've had to disable this option before. I bought my Dell second hand and the previous owner had the key-click sound on. I had to disable it manually.
