Text messaging while driving

I don't do it. But all my friends do and it's so annoying.

One time it was raining while my friend and I were driving back from Myrtle Beach. We were in West Virginia and it's really curvey there. She just kept texting the whole time while trying to make 10mph sharp turns while on wet pavement. I don't care how good of a texter you are .. that's just plain dumb.

I try not to. People always seem to call me when I'm in the car though. 🙁

Two words.Voice mail.I'm not sure how texting works honestly. But whatever it might be it can wait. Not worth hurting or killing yourself or someone else over.

I've never understood texting while driving in the first place. Talking is one thing, because even if it is distracting, you can still keep your eyes on the road. Texting requires you to look at the damn phone. I cannot tell you how idiotic I find such a practice.

I don't know about anyone else, but if I have my phone on in a car, I usually not put it in my pocket. I put it in the space where you put your pennies and change on the door, or I put it on the driver's side seat.

No, it's not justification, but I would rather not have to fumble around for a cell phone while on the expressway with semi's all around me.

And if the thing falls, that thing is staying down there until the ride is over.

This really grinds my gears.😡

The Times reported last week that the federal agency tasked with keeping US roadways safe suppressed research seven years ago on the dangers of cellphone use while driving, fearing political fallout from the study.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opted against making public data it had compiled on the dangers of "multitasking" behind the wheel because of concerns about angering members of Congress, the daily said.

The NHTSA research, which tracked cell phone use by US drivers in 2002, found that 955 people were killed during 240,000 roadway accidents while speaking or texting on a cell phone.

Guilty. In my defense, if it's something simple I'm texting, then I don't really need to look down to see what I'm typing since I have the numbers and letters pretty much memorized. If it's more complicated, I pull over.

If a call is all that important, then pull over to the side of the road and take the call while parked. 😀

Text messaging while driving is not only one of the most idiotic and dangerous things a person can do, but also the most selfish. Yea, you are placing your own life at risk. That really isn't anyone else's problem since you are VERY aware of the risk and don't seem to care. HOWEVER, you are also placing at risk every person in every vehicle around you. If someone dies because you wreck into them while texting, it shouldn't considered an accident- it should be considered murder.

Stupidity kills.

that's why I only don't care when people are walking or riding bicycles when being stupid. (like being drunk or text messaging) If you don't have 3000 lbs of steel under your butt the only thing getting hurt is said butt.

Or purchase a hands-free headset

Studies have shown that handsfree doesn't really make a difference. It's not paying attention to traffic that causes the problems. I have problems calling while paying attention to traffic so I just quit doing it. (after all, what's the point if the only thing you say is "uhh, uhmm, uhh, what were we talking about?")

Darwin at work, my friend. You can pass whatever laws you want, but there's only one sure way to get rid of stupidity...

What pisses me off is the fact that the NHTSA withheld this information because they were worried about political fallout, and getting the congress upset.

This comes near to criminally negligent homicide on their part.

Or purchase a hands-free headset

From personal experience, it doesn't help much. Last time I was hands-free I almost drove into a one-way street going the other direction. It's the talking that distracts. Texting makes it worse obviously.

I am soooo guilty. But, I don't have to look to see what I am txting. I usually wait for a stop light to read or quickly reply so that I'm not actually moving.

no phone call or text message is so important that you can't wait 5 to 20 minutes to get to where you're going to answer it..

I don't personally like it and people who try to justify it sound a lot to me like people who drive after a few drinks. Chances are they can handle it and no one will get hurt. Percentages however don't mean a thing if you lose a loved one because someone else overestimated their own ability to multi-task, and being sorry afterwards is useless.

That being said I have been known to drive sometimes when bone tired and am definitely guilty as well. We all take our chances I guess and hope that it never happens to, or because of us.

You are certainly correct!

Stupid is as stupid does!

Excuse me, I don't want to miss my turn and my cell is ring.............
