Obsolete? Hell no. Over half the artists here don't use Poser and we still get along OK.

To be truthful, I really don't like poser. Regular drawings give the picture more life. Poser pics may be 3D, but they look fake, if that makes sense with an art picture. How do I make the comparision...set up a couple of mannequins in a tickling position and take a photograph of them. That's how poser pics seem to me in a toon sense, and I love toons more than photos. That's not to say the people who make them don't have talent, they do...Dave 2112's stuff really is awesome. It's just that if I had to choose between drawings and poser pictures, it's drawings for me.

I just saw those Poser jpegs by Michael2003, and that looked frickin' awesome to me, especially the first one. I'm sure there are a few limitations now, but those will eventually be overcome. Since I don't have comic-book-artist mad skills, I think I'll try my hand at Poser soon, although I have some more important projects to take care of now.

Thanks for any nice comments, but flattery will get you nowhere. Ok, except this one time ... I'll try to complete this one request e-mailed to me like 2 years ago for tomorrow.

And yes, he is I, and I am he, but in essence, so much has changed that it doesn't feel that way.

Poser is an excellent program and a lot of the artists on here have done some amazing things with it but the one thing that always bugged me about it is that all the feet are the exact same. In real drawings no two pairs of model's feet will ever look the same but I have seen the "poser foot" too many times and it doesn't do much for me anymore. Just my two cents.

That's the one thing that got me too. I like pics that show the soles of the feet, and like i said before, it reminds me of mannequins. Now I'm no great artist by a long shot, I just posted my first a couple days ago, so I feel I have no real right to criticise one way or the other, but then again, I'm an honest guy. The more tickle toons the better, poser or otherwise, I'll love them all. I'm just stating the type I prefer. 🙂

Well, I read Poser comes in handy for old schoolers too.

Some artists plan the poses with Posers models, and then commit them to paper - or redraw them altogether on Photo Shop.

I tried doing that, but I find the basic models a bit too bony. Not quite skinny, but on Poser 4 their limbs were a bit "stiff". 🙂

Oh, this reminds me: I dabbled a bit and churned out a couple of semi-decent Posers pics.

You can't imagine what you can piece together, using only free props found around the web. 🙂

As a Poser artist, I can easi;y say that drawing will NEVER be obsolete. In fact, the reason I create in CGI is that I can't draw at all and have deep respect for those who can. Poser (and Arcsoft and all the other software I use) is simply my tool of choice to express what my hands can't.

In defense of Poser artists, however, I will say that there is more to it than "spin the dials". I don't want to speak for anyone else, but the real magic and fun for me comes in the post-render work. I do most of my shading by eye and hand and create many other effects this way after the images have been rendered, often in a laborious pixel-by-pixel approach. If people really knew how much of my stuff wasn't even created in Poser, they'd probably be surprised.

I completely agree with some of the sentiments that Poser work can appear Mannequin-ish. I spend more time on faces and joint positioning than anything else to counter this limitation. I don't use basic figures anymore for that very reason.

All in all, art is art, whatever the medium. Creativity cannot be done for you, no matter how many toys you have. Line art will always be my favorite and will always have my deep respect and admiration.

Even 3D graphics can only go so far. Sometimes the good old pencil and paper work even better. But having 3D graphics is a blessing at times too.
