The 90s thread...

Nirvana.

Being single.

Being in school, before I had a career.

A few girlfriends I dated in between being single.

Soundgarden.

I fucking LOVED the 90s and miss the shit out of them. I don't miss the poor technology we had compared to today, but what I ultimately miss is how much FUN life was in a pre-9/11 culture (no, that's not a political statement, but if you look at 90s commercials, movies, etc. you get a subconscious feeling of a lack of tension that pervades everything in all media today).

What I love and miss?

Personally:
0. My mom, alive and well.
1. Having friends that I can physically hang out with on a daily basis
2. A job that I loved in a mall that I liked
3. The two best years of my life in my first 2 years of college in Chicago
4. Having a bright, open future
5. Being skinny...also being able to eat a shit-ton of McDonalds without consequence
6. Video games...I just don't have the knack for the new ones
7. Staying up all night till 7 in the morning and not getting tired
8. No bills or financial obligations
9. $20 for one tank of gas
10. Bar None candy bars & Vanilla Laffy Taffys
12. Riding my bike anywhere with anyone for no reason whatsoever
12. No teenagers walking around in letter jackets reading "Class of 2014"
13. NO EMO!

Culturally:
1. Beavis & Butt-Head UNCENSORED
2. Liquid Television
3. Aeon Flux
4. Ren & Stimpy
5. Awesome 90s music like Stone Temple Pilots, The Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, Beck (yes I know these last two are still making music), Nirvana, Soundgarden, etc.
6. Shitty 90s music that was still infinitely catchier and better than shitty Naughts music
7. Weird ass music videos
8. Weird ass independent movies like The Doom Generation
9. Actually...independent 90s cinema altogether.
10. The last good years of MTV programming (which weren't GREAT, but hey...no The Hills)
11. The X-Files
12. Daria with new episodes AND original soundtrack
13. Hype Williams music videos
14. Funny awesome commercials like this one:
<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/_N9M01pwpSU&hl=en_US&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/_N9M01pwpSU&hl=en_US&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

15. Video arcades with awesome old-fashioned fighting and adventure games like Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter II, Terminator 2, etc.
16. Video games that only cost .25 a play
17. Vending machine soda for .50

and finally...

18. Optimism about the new millennium (1 whole fucking year...yay)

What I do NOT MISS

Personally:
1. Being an undiagnosed autistic with LOTS of poor social skills
2. HIGH SCHOOL. Not fun.
3. Living with two high-strung critical parents
4. Having to hide most of my life from said parents
5. NO SEX LIFE. AT. ALL.

Culturally:
1. Bill Clinton sex scandal...Impeach him or not, just don't eat up all the fucking airtime about it!
2. O.J. Simpson...a precursor for all the fucking TV we'd lose to current events in the future
3. Shitty video cameras

I might be able to think of more, but that's it for now...FFFFUCK! I miss the 90s.

Batman: The Animated Series. Exo Squad, Star Trek: TNG and DS9, The X-files, dial-up modems, AOL chatrooms, insane dot com companies, the Energizer bunny, a popular NHL, and Toy Story.

Oh, and I could eat whatever I wanted and not gain weight. :sigh:

Loved (Before moving to the USA):
Discovering Metallica
Super Nintendo
Drunken underage parties
Exploring the hills around town with my friends
The X-Files
Seeing Jurassic Park and thinking it was awesome
Not having to worry about health insurance

Hated:
Everything about high school
The year I spent living in a shithole called Hamilton, near Glasgow
Oasis
Oasis vs Blur war - I didn't give a shit, they both sucked.
The Spice Girls
UK's sad pop culture in general - I mean...Mr. Blobby for fuck's sake

(After Moving to the USA)
Loved:
Being 3000 miles away from high school
TV with a marathon of something I liked almost every day on some channel or other
Sam Goody, the Wall, and Suncoast
Gene's Books in the King of Prussia Mall
Xena (Baywatch with a dominatrix. I just hated the silly noise she made when she attacked people)
Discovering the internet
Clicking on the link to a website named Solefully Yours and almost having a coronary when realizing my strange fixation was a legitimate, albeit underground sexual interest.
Finding alt.multimedia.tk, even though it was a spam-ridden, flaming warzone
Being a dependent on my dad's benefits
Preacher was published. Most amazing comic series ever.

Hated:
Having no friends in this country outside of the internet
The insane amount of commercial breaks on US network TV
Having 24 hour news networks that report barely any decent world news
A population obsessed with making money at any cost

the whole of the 90's was just a bit rubbish. th only decade i hate more than the 90's is the 80's. corny shit

I just realized that the last 3 things I mentioned weren't really about the 90's. They're still happening. Ah well.

Can't say I miss the 90's much. The economy here went down the tubes, my mother had a stroke and one of my brothers was diagnosed with a brain tumor which would take his life in July 2000. I moved back to Kansas in 1997 so I could help out. I hated leaving Texas but they needed me, it's what you do for family. They would have done the same for me.

One thing I remember is how unified we were during Desert Shield and Desert Storm during the first Gulf War. Other then the first moon landing in 1969, I had never seen this country come togeather like that in my lifetime. A shame that it took a war to do it, but that's the way it is.

I miss.
Cheaper fuel prices
Beavis and Butthead

Ren and Stimpy

I really don't miss 90's music. Most of it I did not like.

90210
nine inch nails
high schools
feeling like you could never die
kyle e jones, and my high school friends I lost

Everyone mentions Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, etc. But no one's posted about this great band, who had something of a comeback in the late 80s/early 90s:
