The American Dream

Do you consider the American Dream to be a true reality or a fantastical one?

If it is not a true reality, and only a "dream" reality, then why do people still strive for it? How and why does a person decide to live within and for a fantasy?

I think the first question is "What is the American dream?". I doubt you can get a lot of people to really agree as to what it is in the first place. Is it the dream of becoming rich and famous beyond your wildest dreams purely due to a single skill you possess? Is it the ability to be paid top dollar for a job that would command much less money in many other countries? The ability to be paid a living wage for a hard days work? Living life to the fullest with little worry of the consequence (unfortunately I think too many people think this latter option is the American dream)? Depending on how you define it, you can make a good argument as to how fantastical of a dream it is.

I think the second question is far easier to answer though. Why does anyone strive for and live with any fantasy? Maybe it's the American dream, maybe it's finding the perfect man/woman with a fairy tale marriage, maybe it's even people who role play their tickle fantasies with people online. In the end, it's simply because that's how they want to live their life or hope they can live their life. For some, it's less of a fantasy and more of an attainable goal while for others, it's more of a fantasy than your greatest fictional books.

my perception of the american dream was being able to make a decent living, provide for your family, and allow your children to potentially have a better life than you did. but yeah, maybe that dream was a reality 60 years ago but my with the current unemployment rate, social security bein bankrupt, that dream is just that, a dream, and my generation/ future generations will definitely have it harder than past ones

Well if you don't count political extremist that over throw their nations authority and super models than yeah this is the only country where you can have nothing and get everything.

America is the dream. It's not real. The gov census has confirmed it to me over the phone.

I asked them in my case since I'm not a Chinese American, A naturalized Chinese citizen, or An American of Chinese decent, What the hell am I?

The answer I received "Just put in what you consider yourself to be identified as"

Since I have no categorization, the politically correct term would be US citizen of color.

Therefore: There can be no American dream if there's no such thing as an American or a place as America.

The American dream is not even so much a dream anymore but a nightmare. It fills people with false beliefs and notions and because of this they refuse to accept hard realities. Because those realities are ignored, things which need to get done are never done.
