The Birthday Party by Harold Pinter Act II.png
the tickling scene in "The Birthday Party" as written by Harold Pinter

You never know where you're going to find stuff. I fell asleep watching this movie, an adaption of the Harold Pinter play, and woke up to the sound of female laughter. I had almost shut it off. I was this close! If you like the older man/younger woman dynamic, this just might be the thread for you, lol.

It's also interesting because look how spare this whole thing is written.....and see how it's handled by different directors/actors. I love the answering line of the 'ler. "You should worry." Yes, she should!!!!

The movie version by far milks the tickling for all it's worth, with giggling punctuating all the overlapping dialog for a good minute or two. I edited all the giggling out and strung them together. I love how the tickling leads to romance for these two! Like, immediately!

But that's not all..........

Here's the same scene from a 1980s production with Julie Waters, who looks super hot in this one. Staged completely different, but still very sexy. I also include the game that they play because it sounds like he may get her off-camera (you hear him go "Woo-hoo-hoo!" and her giggle and I think say "stop it" or something.)

Here's the scene from a 1970 BBC radio production

And to show how difficult Pinter is to act, and what a great director or great set of actors can bring out of the slightest of texts, look at this college production, which has no life to it, and no pace:

Some productions of this play cut this little scene, by the way.

Anyone out there a director? Please direct "The Birthday Party"! You an actor/'ler? Goldberg's the role you want to play! An 'lee actress? Lulu is the role for you! This play is not obscure and frequently done so look out for it at a theatre near you!

PS: And if that's enough - and by golly, don't you think it should be? - there are f/m scenes earlier in the play, which you can see by clicking here.

Enjoy!
