You might find this book interesting if you have never come across it.

The Shoemaker: The Anatomy of a Psychotic by Flora Rheta Schrieber. A very dark and disturbing read, and hard to put down. I finished it within two or three days.

IT by Stephen King - One of the best books I've ever read. Many times.

I've seen the old TV movie, but never read the book. Many people say it's the best thing he has ever written.

Still Life of the Woodpecker is a very strange read.

And yes, It really is literary crack. It's not just a scary story, there are so many different elements of that book that make it a brilliant novel.

I'd like to plug some books by two of my favorite historians, both sadly no longer with us. 🙁

American Caesar, by William Manchester. This is a biography of Douglas MacArthur, and it's a great read.

Goodbye Darkness is an account of Manchester's service as a Marine in WWII. It's one of the best books I have ever read about the war in the Pacific.

Undaunted Courage, by Stephen Ambrose. This book tells the story of the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1804-1806.

If you have any intrest at all in history, you can't go wrong with anything Manchester and Ambrose wrote in my humble opinion.

WORLD WAR Z, The oral history of the Zombie war.

By Max Brooks (Mel Brooks' son). Very good story.

I loved World War Z, it is an incredibly well thought out book...especially considering it's centered around a zombie apocalypse. Also, try giving the audiobook, a whirl, the voice acting is phenomenal and really brings the book alive.

I can't even begin to tell you what a giant pile of garbage the TV movie IT is in comparison to the book. I know it's generally accepted that the book is always better, but in this case especially the movie might as well have been a still image of a turd for 3 hours. The book is a masterpiece. If you like King and haven't read this, do so immediately. Then check out The Stand and the Dark Tower series.

Every King fan I have ever talked to would agree with you. I read a collection of some of his short stories years ago, and I thought they were well done even though fiction in general does not intrest me. Perhaps I'll check it out sometime. Thanks for your input here. 🙂

I know this thread is a bit old, but maybe some who missed it the first time around would like to suggest something. And I have a few more myself. 🙂

The Forgotten Soldier, by Guy Sajer. This is a searing personal account of his service on the Eastern Front as a German soldier in WWII. Many historians doubt it's veracity. I suspect the book is largely true, and that Sajer made some mistakes and perhaps embellished a few things.

An American in the Gulag, Alexander Dolgun. Dolgun was a clerk at the American Embassy in Moscow after WWII. Arrested by the KGB as a suspected spy, he endured months of brutal interrogation and then spent many years in Soviet labor camps. His survival is a tribute to the human spirit.

currently i am reading Kushiel's Dart (for the 2nd time) by Jacqueline Carey an interesting read if you like a bit of scifi mixed with a bit of bdsm..
