I am ashamed to be a loyal fan of the Kansas City Chiefs. I supported them in the horrible seventies (jumping on the Steelers bandwagon for the time being), even in that magic year of 1981 when Marv Levy had instilled hope with an 8-4 record, only to choke to 9-7, which wasn't bad. They did beat the defending champ Raiders in their last game in Oakland. After that, they struggled again, amongst the failures was the epic draft bust of Todd Blackledge, the tragic death of up and coming RB Joe Delaney and two more dismal seasons before Carl Peterson took over the team with Marty Schottenheimer as head coach in 1989.
The great draft picks of Derrick Thomas and Neil Smith was the beginning of a resurgence in KC turning Arrowhead stadium into an intimidating and loud venue for any visiting team. The Chiefs would finally get back to the playoffs and have some success with aging QB Joe Montana and revived the career of Marcus Allen, who would later set records as a Chief. reaching the title game in 1993. Unfortunately, that was the only bright spot in the past 20 years.
Since then, there were major playoff meltdowns in 1995 and 1997 deepening the horrible post-season legacy of Schottenheimer. The collapse began in earnest during the Monday Night Meltdown against the hated donkeys in 1998, and capped with total falldown of 2008 at 2-14. At that record, a coach would normally get sacked.
As of this writing:
Rod Marinelli, Lions...no surprise here.
Mike Crennel, Browns 4-12, fired.
Eric Mangini, Jets 9-7, lost four of five to end season, fired.
Herman Edwards, Chiefs 2-14, still employed...WHAT THE FUCK???????
Only the Lions are worse this past season, and it couldn't get any worse than the immortal 0-16.
