On this day in 1959, three talented performers died in a plane crash and became perhaps the first Rock stars whose lives ended in tragedy. J.P. Richardson, (The Big Bopper) had a major hit with "Chantilly Lace", Ritchie Valens had hits with "La Bamba" and "Donna", and was the first Latino Rock star, and the multitalented Buddy Holly left this world at the young age of 22 years old. His hits were many... "Maybe Baby", "That'll Be The Day", "Peggy Sue", and so on. Buddy was also the first Rock star to write, produce and perform his own music, paving the way for acts like The Beatles and Beach Boys.

Don McLean immortalized that fateful day in his 1971-72 hit, "American Pie." May Buddy, J.P. and Ritchie rest in peace.

It's Debatable

As to whether Buddy Holly was the first person to write, produce and perform his own rock music. Suffice it to say he was the first WHITE person to do son and be famous for it.

Otherwise great thread!

Thanks Tron... my memory may be a bit sketchy on the details... after all, Chuck Berry wrote and recorded his own music but I'm not so sure that he produced it. I know that Buddy's influence in Rock music was enough to give John Lennon and Paul McCartney inspiration about their own musical direction. And Buddy's group's name, The Crickets, helped inspire the name The Beatles.

LOL!!

Trust me, I'm not about to take anything away from Buddy Holly! The man was a genius, and an excellent performer to boot.

Waylon Jennings went to his grave tortured by the fact that he gave up his seat on that airplane to the Big Bopper after he complained that he was too ill to take the bus home. Buddy was too tired, as well. So Waylon would have perished had he not been so kind.

Here's a bit of information about that incident on this link:

Amen. I saw both the Buddy Holly Story, and La Bamba. Great portrayals of Holly by Gary Busey, and Richie Valens, by Lou Diamond Phillips. Both films, were, in my opinion, well done, moving, and real.
American Pie is one of my favorite songs of all time. I thought that Don Mclean did an excellent job of paying tribute to all the young men who were lost on that tragic day. As Mclean so aptly states in his song, it really was "The Day The Music Died" Rest in peace, gentlemen. Your lives on this earth may have been short lived, but your music, and your legacies, will live on forever.

I didn't realize it was the anniversary of that tragic crash. Thanks for the reminder and the links.

You're welcome, Milagros.

I listened to nothing but Buddy Holly's music while I was out driving around town today. Great stuff!
