The great 2010 FIFA World Cup thread

Spain certainly knows how to get the dramatic W.

Congrats Spain, sorry Holland.

FIFA wanted Spain to win, the referee was instructed to let Spain win. It's all a fascist capitalist setup. There are more Spaniards than Dutchmen, so more revenue for FIFA if Spain wins.

Until and unless I see proof of this, I will presume that you have slandered the Spanish team and the referee.

I don't mind the slandering of the refs, because they were bad the whole tourney.

Spain didn't impress
offensively all tournament long, but they certainly had a stellar defense.

I can see how some fans feel a little cheated.

Indeed, it wasn't necessarily "pretty" the 1 - 0 result, but it was effective. And occurring when it did, avoided the miserable free kicks that are the worst way to end it all.

Sure, I liked some of the other countries/teams better than those in the Final. But for history's sake 'it is what it is'.

The referees did a generally admirable job in as usual, very trying circumstances. Those with more experience at this level, obviously more successful at spot judgements. There will always be the planet looking over every single nod they make. Thankfully those kind of responsibilities will never fall on any of our shoulders. Perhaps a bit more technology should be included in the management of the matches (M. Blatter?). Time will tell.

I've been an observer of the WC-Mundiale since about 1963. Played in school in 1965-67. This 2010 Cup has been one of the most incredible and unusual, that I've ever seen. We were all wowed by some spectacular individual performances, and some previously little recognized countries have gained much new respect (yes... even USA in that number!).

Spain While not scoring many, played football that was the way football should be played.

To be honest while the referee made a mistake giving the goal kick instead of the corner before the goal, he also made a mistake not red carding de jong and Van Bommel(who has been one of the dirtiest players in the tournament)

I still can't believe the way the dutch played, they played like a Sunday league team. And when there greatest ever player says hes disgusted with the way they played, It says it all.

Best team won.

Poor old Johann Cruyff he must be deeply ashamed to have had to watch his national team play like Wimbledon.

Not as ashamed as I am at being from the same country as the referee. The dick should have dismissed at least three Dutch players, if not four or five. He bottled it, in my opinion. Sepp Blatter and Michel Platini must have been creaming their jeans over it.

I thought he did a good job. Thats a ridiculous statement to make. I doubt any of the other refs would have been as ready to book players as he was. In fact the statistics show only one other ref has shown more cards during the tournament. He may well have shown discretion in the context of the fact it was the World Cup final, and maybe you can argue it was wrong to have done so, but I am not sure about that.

I cant believe the Dutch have had the nerve to complain about the ref though! They went out with the sole intent of kicking the Spanish off the pitch. Was the ref responsible for them missing two sitters though? I think not.

I fancy Derby to beat this present Dutch side to be honest. In fact I think Rob Hulse would have had a better world cup than the spud faced nipper.

When someone hits another player with a flying kick that missed crushing his windpipe by about three inches and instead nearly performed a heart bypass with his studs, this is no excuse for letting him remain on the field. There are no second chances, no finger wagging, no yellow cards with an admonition not to be naughty in the future. The psychotic fucker goes immediately or the ref is a gutless/blind shithead.

Same as the one who didn't so much as book Gazza in that cup semi-final (the one where he injured his own knee in the process of committing an horrendous foul that would have had Norman Hunter or Nobby Stiles gasping in horror) when he first studded one guy in the chest and then nearly amputated the leg of another.
Even if he'd gone down and been stretchered off straightaway instead of actually trying to play on like he did, I would have followed the stretcher off the field with the red car in the air above it.
