The great 2010 FIFA World Cup thread

I love this world cup. Italy are out too, they can arrange a friendly match with France now.
Japan is through with an impressive display over Denmark.

Well done USA. Deserved to win the group without a doubt. But unlucky Slovenia.
I bet the interest in america has gone through the roof now that your through the 'boring' group stage and its all or nothing in the knockouts. No draws anymore!! I really like dempsey and donovan so am happy for them.

We have made it hard for ourselves. Germany, Argentina, Brazil????

Fucking get in the italy are out !!!!!!!!!

Anyone else rooting for Chile tomorrow (I guess later today)?
Spain, France, and Italy out in group stage would be quite the World Cup.

On another note, I bet Japan has not made any complaints on the Jabulani ball, did you see their free kicks? Very impressive. Honda is dangerous with that left foot, starting to make a name for himself with keepers.

To that certain section of the German press and football establishment: Wembley Tor is now cancelled out. You can now stop whinging about 1966. Fair deal?

The disallowed goal and FIFA's refusal to endorse video technology is a disgrace. That said, Germany were by far the better team and Ozil has been one of my favourite players to watch at the World Cup.

No idea what happened to England. No tactical sense from the manager, no goals from Rooney. There will be recriminations!

At least I can watch Argentina v Mexico as a neutral with the change of some Messi magic and more touchline shenanigans from Maradona.

true dat!!! and england now have our compulsary excuse for being knocked out. i.e we would have won it if sol cambells goal hadnt been wrongly dis-allowed,
we would have won it if ronaldo werent such a dirty eyed winker,
we would have won it if that goal had stood...

nothing to do with the fact we about as much good as a chainmail condom...

anyway roll on next season...UP THE SPUUUUUUUUURS!!!!!!!!!!!

enjoy your softball or whatever it is you do yanks lol

Oh I've got no problem at all, when it comes to admitting how utterly fucking shite we are, or what a stubborn bell-end the manager is. I just thought I'd point that out, considering I recently became aware of how much shit we still get over the W-T, and how many people think we bought our way to the cup that year. (Presumably also citing the sending off of Rattan in the quarters.)

I have been listening to a fair bit of US TV news coverage of the world cup and find it rather confused. There is plenty of the usual stuff about how boring it is, and how wonderful US sports are in comparison. This is of course easily countered ,see my many posts on how shite I and boring I think US sports are. My views are of course based on complete ignorance of the sports I seek to denigrate, and this is clearly true of the clowns on US TV, difference being they dont seem to know how ignorant they are.

What is however rather more strange is the curious but unmistakable petulant undertone, which seems to carry message something like this..... "how dare these people have the worlds biggest sporting event and not check it out with us first!...how dare they have this massive, global sports party for a whole month, which has bugger all to do with the USA?....the sheer insubordination of these people!!...how dare they!!"

Glen Beck had a bit of a rant along these lines the other night, which rather underlined my views. You would be hard pressed sometimes to realise the US did actually take part.

England have had the same problem for years now, great inidividual players who can't play together. It was highlighted in Germany 4 years ago but the Rooney sending off overshadowed the mediocrity. I couldn't believe the way the commentators were talking after the Slovenia game, coming out with stuff like "much better" and "more like the england we know" When anyone with the volume turned down could see they were still abysmal but were playing a fairly rubbish side that made them look poor instead of shit like Algeria did.

As for Rooney I've been saying since the turn of the year that he was going to burn himself out before the World Cup because he was single handedly keeping Man United in the title race and in Europe. Since he got injured against Bayern, he's not scored and not looked the same player, Both England and Man United seemed to rely too heavily on him, During the Germany game I'd have taken him off instead of Defoe because he's been non existent the entire tournament.

But England are deservedly out and have FINALLY got the dose of reality that they've needed so badly.

Well, I can; I'm afraid Brazil will be the end of our participation in this tournament.

I hope not.

I respect Brazil for being a good soccer team and all, but I can't root for them. It's like rooting for the Yankees.

I want to Dutch to get the W (and play either Germany or Spain for the Cup).
