I accidently surfed into a website called Shadowimage which is a collection of haunted sites throughout the US (with directions in some cases.)

Anyways in the Ohio Section I noticed an entry under Vermillion that entry being Gore Orphanage Road. It described a legend about an orphanage there and lo and behold I had to laugh.

Years ago when I was but a young teen my brothers, cousins and myself used to take girls out there to get laid and to get drunk. It seems it was a party spot for quite a few others, so we started a rumor about some hauntings and very soon it became quite vacant.

NOW that story appears on a website!! LOL It was with great chagrin I wrote them today to tell them the true origin of that story!

That, is absolutely hilarious. I love it!

I actually have a slightly similar tale to tell, that revolves around three short stories I wrote as a high school junior. These were written for fun, on my own time, but there came a day when the teacher announced a writing assignment whilst we were studying the finer aspects of horror literature. I was feeling a bit of writer's block at the time, so I simply turned in the three stories I'd already written.

As it turns out, the teacher was very impressed with these stories... one of which focused around an old, deserted, boarded-up farmhouse lying along a countryside road near the edge of town. The town I was living in had the largest land area of any town in our state, but was sparsely populated at 11,000 people, and this particular landmark had all the earmarks of a 50's zombie movie. Desolate, eerie, and as I've said deserted.

Well, this place had always been rumored as 'haunted,' but that's as far as the rumor got. I made up something extensive, more or less off the top of my head, as background information on this house. It involved, as I recall, a farmer who murdered his wife and daughter, who was in turn murdered by a vagrant, all of this back during the Great Depression. I threw in a lot of detail which had made a strong impression on me after my own exposure to it in certain edgy horror stories which weren't a part of our current studies.

Anyway, this teacher of mine, showed it to some of the other members of the faculty, and one of them suggested to the editor of the school newspaper that they do a story on my story. All well and good, except this student misunderstood completely, and took the teacher's suggestion to be 'do a story on the house, with this information.'

So, one week later, the halloween edition of the school newspaper came out. In it was what amounts to a rewrite of the background information I'd made up for my story, printed as fact. That was about eight years ago... I'm in contact, still, with some friends from that area, who tell me that their younger relatives still come home around halloween talking about the 'murders in the old farmhouse' and the 'terrible tramp of 1931.' There've been reports of kids sneaking into the house and experiencing ghostly afterimages of the events I wrote about.

Damn... Wish I still had that story.

Hm... I've tried 'shadowimage' with all of the standard endings, it's probably just a network burp somewhere. Could you give me the address of the shadowimage website, to be sure?

this might be the first time i partially agree with you on anything. Being that i am an Alum of Vermilion High School, i know about Gore. Gore now is either A) infested with the KKK members back in the wooded areas a good mile or B) Having Fireland High School Kids waitin to jump out and start problems with you cause all they have to do in that city is ride tractors. Not saying V-town was much better. Ive gone down there several times, ive seen both a and b and a lot of deer. Theres nothing scary about it, unless you are afraid of the dark. The true story was that none of the kids died in the orphange like it said, the owner got them all out, all you here down in the deep valley is the trucks from the Ohio Turnpike and wind howling around down there. Ive never been scared of it. Ive gone down by myself before. now most of the area is closed off or is patrol by the sheriff so we stopped messin with the Klan(i hate them, but i got my revenge on them for messing with my friend) I rarely even go back to that city, cause most of the ppl are racist anyways. as for what you said, you are right about that area.

But What Was There To Disagree About?

I made up a story and it turned into an urban legend. There's nothing to disagreee with.

I haven't been to Vermillion in years except to drive through it.

Amherst, now there's a racist town.

Here's the link it's called Shadowland, not shadowimage. I'm sorry! http://theshadowlands.net/places/

lmfao! agreed with you again tron. i think hell is freezing over. Amherst Kids hate me. I love it. Racist wanna be rich kids. They aint sh*t if you ask me. Not one of em im afraid of. Little Punks.

you know tron a lot of this sounds like bullshit to me. i mean, i live diagonally from this place imma bout to post. its across the tracks..maybe about a mile from me. little less..its a nice neighborhood surrounded by the start of where our city turns ghetto. Lorain - G Street Park - A railroad spike was removed from a hole and ever since strangely odd things have been occurring. A figure of a ghostly woman has been seen around midnight near the spot of the hole. Screams and yells have been heard since the removal of the spike and extremely severe storms have since swept the area.

now, we have had our fair share of storms, but nothing extremely severe. i think maybe one funnel cloud ever passed over this area in the 20 years ive been alive.

now this devils heart bridge in vermilion..id like to know where that is, cause ive never heard of it. Id go try it out.

next..gore...now, what was strange was my friend did come back from gore and had the small hand print on his car. smaller than his huge hands could make. maybe thats true, maybe it isnt..to me, its all hysterical to read about. i do wanna try devils heart bridge tho. seems like fun.

NT1350- there are plenty of places like that around here; you should visit them

I've Never Figured Out

How Amherst, which is enveloped between too areas with a high proportion of minorities (Oberlin and Lorain) and bounded on the east by Elyria can remain an all white area.

Wanna see a truly creepy area? Try Fayette Bridge (which used to be creepier when it was a covered bridge) and the cemetary just before it.

Take Route 60 East past Route 18. Fayette road is within 10 miles of the intersection. Take Fayette North. Soon you'll see a big creepy looking cemetary on the left, shortly afterwards is a turn off to the right with a bridge over a small creek.

I got scared as fuck out there one night.

Another good haunt. The Otterbein (Otterbridge) Mausoleum in the Wellington Cemetary.

(PS we used to love to go beat up Amherst kids)

Amherst is prodominatly white still, with few minority groups. MY area in lorain is still that way, although most areas have evolved into mixed communities. I got no problem with any race as long as they try to keep the place looking good. Most areas arent looking too hot now a days. Hopefully my area will never look like that. Imma have to check out that area sometime. ill go alone too. just like devils bridge, nothing will happen. Amherst kids..bah! bunch of punks, ive had my fair share of scuffles with them. they aint shit but wannabe rich bitches. even westlake kids are cooler than them.

A brief sway from the original post......

My kid lives in Amherst with her father. She goes to Amherst Steele High and is having pretty decent time at it. But it's not like it was when she was at Rocky River. Now, she only hangs with the girls on her basketball team. She doesn't socialize with too many outside the team. I've met some of them and they seem okay. I just hate it when the parents come to the basketball games drunk-just drives me nuts!

When I lived in Fairview for awhile, that was the absolute worst! I would get a police escort in and out of the city. The cops were always scanning my plates, and my son got harrassed constantly. I moved out of there with smoke on my heels!!

You're right about Vermillion though. I was working with a client over the phone and went to Vermillion to meet her. When I got in the driveway, the world's biggest German Shepard was in the yard. When she came to the car and saw me, she said, "you have to understand my dog's not used to seeing anyone darker than me"! How the hell about that?? Then she made a comment about interracial relationships and that God didn't intend for us to mix races. I showed her a picture of my biracial daughter and watched her turn beet red and her jaw dropped. Did I mention the confederate shrine in one of her rooms? Now that's my version of hell in that city!!! I haven't been back there since.

Kis..not all Amherst Kids are bad, hell ive lived in Amherst b4 i moved here. I liked Amherst as a town, i just had problems, cause i went to Vermilion Through Open Enrollment and They didnt like me cruisin around their turf, which led to many confrontations. stupid i know, but they still dont bother me. My step bro and sis both attend Amherst Steele, very nice school. I just didnt get along much with some of the kids, not all. I still have a few friends from Steele that i talk to. There are some tho, who think they are better than everyone. Vermilion is racist..i dont care what anyone says, It starts with the parents too. Most of us werent racist, but there were a few, who we told to "F" off. Guess thats what happens when you live in Mayberry. Why i left the city in the first place.

Cool story Tron. All of these Urban Legends and rural ghost stories have to start somewhere. In life, we leave quite a bit behind for the generations to follow, some beneficial, some harmful...some are just modern re-tellings of themes that have haunted Man forever. They are usually quite effective.

Speaking of freaky-ass places...ever been to the Pine Barrens down in Jersey? There's some deep-ass Blair-Witch-kinda woods mixed with the ever-growing legend of the Jersey Devil.

Amazing how these legends that seem so hokey from outside thier local area are taken so seriously by those within that area. I tell ya, there's a lot of people down there who take the Devil legend really seriously.

Weird.
