The most important songs in history

Murph71 said:
It's just that the songs mentioned are songs that are always mentioned. Just once it would be nice to read a list without all of the usual suspects on it.

Speaking of the usual suspects, how about 'As Time Goes By' from Casablanca? (you must remember this, a kiss is just a kiss...)

A personal one of mine

Here's mine....It's called To Win Just Once by the Saw Doctors.I don't think many people would have heard of them so I've provided the lyics-as it was them that caught my attention before the tune.

To win just once

To win just once would be enough
For those who’ve lost in life and love
For those who’ve lost their guile and nerve
Their innocence, their drive and verve
For those who feel they’ve been mis-treated
Discriminated, robbed or cheated
To claim one victory inspired
To win just once is their desire

To win just once against the odds
And once be smiled on by the Gods

To race with speed along the track
Break the tape and not look back
To never have considered losing
As if to win is by your choosing

Bare you soul for all to find
An honest heart and an open mind

To Win just once
That would be enough

So come all ye full-time small -town heroes
Cast away your in-bread fears of
Standing out from all the rest
The cynics and the pessimists
The self-indulgent almost rich
The blatant hurlers on the ditch
Time is passing so come on
And face the ball, the game is on

(The words in bold is what made the song relative to me and how I was feeling)

personally...a few songs on the soundtrack to my life:

"Come To My Window" ~ Melissa Etheridge
"Closer to Fine" ~ Indigo Girls
"Hold On", "Push", and "World's On Fire" ~ Sarah McLachlan
"Light In Your Eyes" and "Everyday is a Winding Road" ~ Sheryl Crow
"Wonder" ~ Natalie Merchant
"Shadowboxer", "Criminal", and "Extraordinary Machine" ~ Fiona Apple
"When I was a Boy", "Better Things", and "Iowa" ~ Dar Williams
"The Long Way Round", "Wide Open Spaces", and "Sin Wagon" ~ Dixie Chicks

And many more I can't think of off the top of my head right now...but those are on my personal soundtrack to my life...😀

The Sting.
I thought I read that his opera was never actually finished, he ended up in an asylum over it. That and racism.

Some good samples. "The Easy Winners" is another catchy one that I swear I've heard in silent movies.

Actually, he went insane from late stage syphillis infection (usually refered to as neurosyphillis when it spreads to the brain). From a biographical movie I saw about him, He did complete it, and a operatic group in New York actually performed it in the late 1970's, I believe

Suzy Is A Headbanger, It's A Long Way Back and Pinhead by The Ramones

Get Off My Cloud, Jumping Jack Flash & Brown Sugar by the Rolling Stones

Just The Way You Are by Billy Joel (ducks to avoid heavy objects being thrown at head).

Come Out by Steve Reich (a collage, not a song, but what the heck).

Let's make a list of the most important songs that no one has ever heard of! 😀

Touche. Although, this can be re-worded as "The Most Important Songs/Albums That People Should Hear."

The Flaming Lips - In a Priest Driven Ambulance With Silver Sunshine Stares

Mercury Rev - See You On The Other Side

Big Black - Songs About Fucking (Though I'm partial to Atomizer)

Sonic Youth - Sister

Six Finger Satellite - Severe Exposure (Though I'm partial to The Pigeon is the Most Popular Bird)

Prince - Sign O' The Times

Minnie Ripperton - Perfect Angel

De La Soul - Three Ft. High and Rising

Metallica - Master of Puppets

Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath

Gram Parsons - Grievous Angel

There be lots more. I apologize if I came-off sounding harsh. I made the same type of comment on a music board that I used to moderate and got the ol' stink-eye there as well. And I also like to look at lists to become informed of bands and artists that I have never heard.

Now that the thread topic has kinda changed i thought i'd add a few of my personal favorite songs even though some may be still be cliched.

Ac/Dc - Dirty deeds done cheap - no matter how many times i've heard that riff it's still one of my favorites and this songs reeks everything i love in rock; sleazyness, solid rythym and of course the groove.

Metallica - Master of puppets - These songs pretty much got me into more thrashy heavy metal. I still think master of puppets is a frickin' masterpiece compared to any modern metal (which i love)

Killswitch Engage - Rose of shrayn/My last serenade - I've never heard a mix of metal and hardcore before and when you combine the mix of screaming and clean singing vocals you get my favorite current band.

Seether - Fine again - Pretty popular song on the radio i believe, anyways kinda depressing but i love the lyrics espeically when i'm down. Simple but emotional song to me.

Just a few of my personal favorites.

THE GRAMMY FOR CRUEL & UNUSUAL PUNISHMENT AGAIN GOES TO GT

Any Song I Sing Is History. John Prine's Blue-ribbon Winning "the Scotsman"? (and Friend Of Course). Sad Songs Like: "remeber Me" And "here Comes The Bride". I Like Parodies Ala Homer And Jethro And Weird Al Yankovich.
