The Obscure Music Thread

I'm more partial to video game music myself. I like it to range from metal and techno to easy listening like some of the themes in Chrono Trigger. I also like creepy Castlevania music and fast paced shooter music. I have a few of these in mp3 but, since I'm on dial-up I usually just dl the midi version after giving them a listen for quality. I also like remixed gaming music. As for dling regular music, I gave up on that long ago. I've heard to many bad things about getting viruses and spyware from using dling programs so, if I want a song really bad, I just painstakingly search for it the same way I would a rare rom which usually turns up nothing. :sigh:

Well then.......this thread didnt really accomplish what I had originally hoped......did anyone at least discover new music that they liked? (Other than Storm with White Zombie)

C.C. ...ya know any of these?:

Feinstein
Narnia
Klick Axe
Riffmaster General
XYZ
Lillian Axe
Ann Boleyn
Tad Morose
Jacobs Dream
Kindrick
Lizzy Borden
Atomic Soul
Virgin Steele
Astral Doors

.....should I keep going?

Acid King- stoner/doom metal; decent stoner rock band whos lead singer kinda sounds like joan jett.

Electric Wizard- doom metal; their Come My Fanatics album was one of the greatest drug induced metal albums i have ever heard.

Goatsnake- doom metal; unlike alot of other doom bands i have heard, you can actually understand what they are saying.

Orange Goblin- stoner rock; cant really explain these guys. they are heavy but not as heavy as other bands. kinda like in the middle.

Sleep- stoner rock; went deeper into the Sabbath sound and added pshycadelic voice, bass, and guitar effects. they are hard to find because they werent out too long.

The Pillows- j-rock; they did the music for flcl(anime). if you dont want to dishout 40 bucks to import an album then u can use kazaa, bearshare etc.

Hey Cheshire, here in the UK "One Step Beyond" by Madness is hardly obscure. Madness are popular here and "One Step Beyond" has been played untold times here. Sneaker Pimps are also appreciated here.

I kinda like Stratovarius. The corny power metal has a charm to it, and I've heard "Destiny", "Infinity" and "Millenium". Of course, it's not all hard rock music that's obscure. Bands and artists like Love and Terry Callier (two of my favourite artists right now) are very obscure to the mainstream listener, particularly the latter. They're more folk music than anything, with Love being psychedelic and Callier being soul and jazz.

I don't care who you are or what you listen to, but you should listen to Love's Forever Changes album. People generally found The Doors to be ones who represented the darker side of the "summer of love" because Jim Morrison happened to be sexy. But Love executed it just as well, maybe even influencing the likes of Morrison and Hendrix. It was the sound of a disillusioned band falling apart largely due to the substances they took, but it became a classic due to the occasionally apocalyptic lyrics within the somewhat jolly music.

If you're into a more instrumental background with soft/enthusisatic female vocals then I'll put forward my two current favorites:

Within Temptation
Leaves Eyes

Within temptation are Dutch I believe, and while being around for years are only just 'breaking through' to the UK.

You guys ever hear of Domestic Blend. My bro and his best friend were lead vocals. I don't know if any of the band is still together, they had a falling out. Here are samples of their stuff.

EDIT: Sorry. My bro asked me to remove the files of his music so, I'm taking the link down.

Hey Chimp, CHECK YOUR DAMN E-MAIL ALREADY!!!

And unfortunately here in the states, Madness is most synonymous with their mainstream 80's pop hit "Our House" and little else. Most consider it to be one of those "one hit wonders". And I only know the Sneaker Pimps from the ill-fated late night music show "AMP" which used to be on MTV back in the 90s. They played all kinds of wierd international music videos....also got into the band Fluke from that show....(check out their song "Atom Bomb" if you haven't heard of them)

Here are a few that I haven't seen on the thread yet...maybe they're more mainstream than I think! This thread will cost me lots of valuable time looking new bands! Thanks a lot!! 🙂

The Mountain Goats- southern California band, mainly the influence of one guy, who used to be mainly acoustic but their latest two albums are more produced. Interesting lyrics and some of the best song titles around.

Of Montreal - 60's ish rock with upbeat melodies and great harmonies but often with dark lyrics.

Sondre Lerche- Relatively mellow but not boring male vocalist from Norway. Sounds a bit like Donovan, if you remember him.

The Jim Yoshii Pile-Up - adult alternative rock

Good Luck, CC! They are not easy to find. I had at one time 5 p2p's running at the same time (split over 2 computers) just trying to find them, ...then when I did, it took shit forever to download most of them. I finally got the entire Astral Doors latest CD, but it took 2 days. Still working on Tad Morose "Modus Vivendi" CD.

Check the band websites and record label sites. They give you free mp3's alot of times, and not just clips but the entire track.

Beautiful Creatures out of Hollywood.

They are releasing their 2nd CD, this month I believe.

Hey, just outta curiosity:

Has anyone ever heard of Gogol Bordello?

Imagine punk . . . mixed with cabaret . . . mixed with gypsies. Try to find their song "Not A Crime" for a true 'wtf' experience.

BTW, I don't have anything against downloading music, but I would encourage people to still buy albums as well -- especially for unknown bands.

I'll go away now.

I really don't make a habit of it. If I can't get the CD at the mo', for whatever reason, I'll download it if I can find it in the p2p's....but I always wind up buying it because I really would rather have the real deal.

I have over 6,000 mp3's on my hard drive, and trust me 98% of that is paid for music. Plus I only share what I've downloaded, and I don't fire up the p2p's all that much.

Sumthin' interesting about downloadable music:

I learned today that not only does a majority of the profit off of a cd go to the record label, but also that usually doesn't come until after their contracts are up (meaning some 5 albums down the line)

. . . does anyone else think that modern music is sort of decaying? Do you suppose the big bad record companies have anything to do with it?

they'll sign ANYBODY ... !!

Go INDIE ....!!!!

I look toward Century Media for the stuff I like. They handle labels such as Nuclear Blast, etc.

Just a thought here: do the record companies still make money if you buy the CD from a 2nd hand shop?

The way I do things is I'll download a few songs by a particular band or performer and if I like them enough I'll go out and by the albums....

With the way things are going right now the music industry will most likely cross over a lot more into the online world until eventually it'll all be online.....people will burn their own CD's at home after purchasing the music on the net....
