*gives Seto a few more rib pokes*

Am I serious that someone who has lived in the United States for many years and who owns a television has never heard of Michelle Kwan, or serious that I didn't faint?

*Flinches.*

Michelle Kwan has, like many athletes, transcended her own speciality and entered the realm of General Knowledge. (An example of this of a different sort - I know five people who have never played or watched tennis in their lives who would have no difficulty in identifying Anna Kournikova.) What struck me as odd was not that the person didn't know who she was or anything about her (I was not at all surprised by the results of a poll in 2004 in which a majority of Americans polled thought that Kwan had won at least one Olympic gold medal - she took silver in 1998 and bronze in 2002), but that he had actually never heard or seen the name.

Actually, I think people like that are very lucky. I pay no attention to many pursuits yet would recognize the names of notable practioners, and I would just as soon not have my brain cluttered up with many things of no use to me.

Maybe it would make you feel better (or even contemplate taking notice of figure skating) if CD were to send you his autographed copy of the issue of Playboy featuring Katarina Witt.

I think it would. To sweeten the deal for Big Norm, Katarina Witt has been said to have very ticklish feet, and that her instructor actually used to use that as punishment when she was lazy learning to skate.

HOLY CRAP!!! 😀😀😀😀😀

I just had an epiphony! A new way perhaps for this thread to regain some life... step 1: get a crowd, step 2: CROWD SURFING...TT-STYLE?

Katarina Witt was in playboy! *blinks*

Yes, it was a year or two after she was no longer competitive to win professional competitions, when she'd almost completely given up on triple jumps. She even brought it up herself at one competition. She'd revived a program to a song called, "I Belong to Me," from an obscure Broadway musical, with which she'd never done especially well at two or three competitions in the past. In what may have been her first competition post-posing, she gave her best performance in years and finished second, ahead of two women who landed triples, and getting a mark from Judge #2 that was .2 higher than her mark from any other judge. Backstage, she said that she'd have to send that judge an autographed copy. If memory serves, the network had done a fluff piece about her posing before she skated.

I take it that you are a figure skating fan Seto???

If you are, it's nice to find another fan! Do you have any "faves" you follow?

I must say, although she has a consistency problem, I love Sasha Cohen.

*grabs Seto's ribs, and starts tickling quickly*

Sasha's ok, but I've always preferred Michelle Kwan and Ekaterina Gordeeva.
Yes, I'm a straight guy who knows about figure skating. Come on, you've got a bunch of beautiful, graceful women out there doing their thing. What's not to like?

If she didn't get married to her skating partner, (lucky bastard he is too!) I'd take Jamie Sale in a heartbeat!

It's at the half...and SHERIFF ROETHLISBERGER IN THE HOUSE!!! HALFWAY TO DETROIT. GO STEELERS!!!!!

I like Sasha too. Kwan's more consistent, and quite remarkable, and pretty much every woman who's skating nowadays owes something to the way Kwan furthered the marriage between athleticism and artistic grace. But when Sasha Cohen's 100% on her game--which isn't always, not by a long shot--I think she's as good a skater as there is out there, strong and graceful and endlessly watchable.

Meanwhile, I confess that even though her outfits are tacky, I think Nicole Bobek's kind of attractive. Plus she falls down a lot.

I don't follow dance much, disliking the probable top two couples, and I never warmed to the pairs champions Totmianina-Marinin, though they have improved enormously ever since they stopped trying to skate Pretty Girl Programs (maybe she's learned from Jayne Torvill how to use relative plainness to advantage).

I absolutely cannot find a rooting interest for the women's event at the Olympics. Right off the bat I eliminate Michelle Kwan and Irina Slutskaya - they are figure skating's equivalent to Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova, and it would ruin things for one of them to have an Olympic gold medal and not the other. Sasha Cohen has lovely positions but her jumps are too little (so are most of Kwan's) and I'm underwhelmed by her program selection. Kimmie Meissner doesn't have sufficient oomph of character, and we've had enough American teenaged winners anyway. All the Japanese skaters are ruled out because that would surpass the splendid Midori Ito, or I would back Fumie Suguri in an instant, as her skating is on a spiritual level that makes her unique, and she won a highly competitive nationals even though Mao Asada landed two triple Axels in the free skate. Elena Sokolova has cured herself of over-delaying lutz and flip jumps and can at times produce good triple-triple combinations, but her layback spin is ghastly. Carolina Kostner is fast but flaky, a sort of opposite to Maria Butyrskaya, whose legs were like peppermint sticks (her knees could never bend on jump landings). Kostner has to skim her jumps across the ice because her legs are like licorice whips and won't support her. Had she been able to skate and do so at full strength I probably would have backed Angela Nikodinov, but at least she'll be at the Olympics as a coach.

I find the men more entertaining not because the skating is necessarily better but because we've been seeing a bit of tension the last year or two between a couple of emerging skaters who give off vibrations of being postgay (not as in having changed, but as in having rejected the validity of the concept of sexual identity) and a couple of their more experienced displaced rivals who give off vibrations of being closeted.

This is long enough; I'll say more later, much about Switzerland.

I don't have a favorite...I just love the grace, the artistry, the athleticism...and I'm always amazed at how infrequently they fall...I can't even WALK on a patch of ice on the sidewalk in the winter without falling...now ice skating...forget it!!!

Plus, the array of beautiful women in tight little numbers is a bonus...😉 😀

Hiya Wade!

Howdy!

I think you should hold seto down and tickle him until he admits Sasha Cohen's superiority.
