WOW, yet again the referees give the Patriots another win. Geesh, how many officials do they own? And they have the eeeasiet schedule in the league. I mean, who do they play? Teams in this league are NOT equal.. and no, any team can NOT beat any team on any given Sunday - or Monday night. Whoever said that is a total moron. So with that in mind I would like to thank all the officials for giving - no handing - the Patriots a win over the Dolphins and.. oh wait.. hey wait a minute you guys. Did I miss something??

Bullshit..

Great teams create their own opportunities. I hate it when non athletes invent reasons for a teams success.

The "Any Given Sunday" expression is true, regardless of how we feel about it. If it weren't true, all we'd have to do is look at the schedule, figure out who's better on paper and hand out the Lombardi Trophy on September 6th. 😎

Sometimes there is the perception that things are not fair Tron. Dave's original post about the subject showed some stats to back up the Pat's getting more calls.

None-the-less even ATHLETES have said some games are called the same as others. I think its just that "human factor". It's like the old saying that the ref's could call holding on every play. I say CALL IT THEN! It might lead to less holding. On the other hand the Steelers and Giants played an entire game without an offensive holding penalty...but three, THREE, tripping calls! I guess it just depends on the official sometimes.

No Offense To Dave..

But statistics are for losers. It's the same theory of My team should always win because they get the most yards. If most of those yards came on two plays it's a misleading statistic.

The Pats create their own luck with a cool QB, a DEfense that won't quit, and the most opportunistic game plan in the NFL. Penalties have nothing to do with it and never have. You don't win two superbowls and about a million games in a row because of penalties.

Are the Pats the best team in the NFL? Hell if I know. What I do know is they consistantly play their best when they have to do so, and play with more discipline than anyone, which is why they don't draw the penalties.

They used to say the same thing about the Packers of the 60s. The Dolphins of 1972 were a remarkably "lucky" team in this regard.

And of all the plays and penalties in a game how does one choose exactly which one cost a team a game?

Very well said Neutron. That was the point of my original post, if you look past the over the top sarcasm. 21 says it all.

Ok!!

Over the net it's sometimes tough to get the drift of someones post.

I always see red indians sarcasm because we've baited each other for years.

Others I have to be told!!

Hey Dave don't ya mean Feb 6th??

No, I meant September 6th. The point of my post was that there'd be no need to even PLAY the games at all if the "Any Given Sunday" rule weren't true.

No offense taken...but stats aren't just for "losers". I didn't post them in the aforementioned thread to act like a loser, but to show something that some may find interesting. I NEVER said the Pats win all of thier games by penalty, nor have I ever claimed foul play among officiating squads. And, if my memory serves, I mentioned how much I respect the Pats as a sucessful team.

I only brought up the stats-behind-the-penalties to show an interesting fact. Just a simple "This vs. That" thing. I didn't make the numbers...they were there for anyone to read and compare.

Factually speaking, the Pats DO benefit more from penalties than any other team. That's just a simple matter of yards and numbers. HOWEVER...that ALONE will not hand a team a 13-1 record. But it does help. Let's get realistic for a moment...someone who played in the NFL should KNOW that a lot of intangibles make up the final score of a game. You can have the best offense in the league but eventually, some guard or tackle is going to make one single bonehead hold or illegal block that hands the other team 10 yards...or jump early and cost you 5. Add those yards up over a game and there are times when you've got the entire length of the field. That will not lead to a score in and of itself, but often leads to one through giving the other team phenomenal opportunities that they wouldn't have had otherwise. So, having all those penalties didn't make the Pats 13-1, but it sure as hell helped them NOT go 10-4. At least three games this years saw the Pats win by three or less points scored directly off a penalty. Add up all the times they do get favorable calls, and that accounts for some portion of your point total.

Math 101. 😎

But, penalties alone don't win championships.
