Has anyone ever heard this lost classic horrible record by the great William Shatner? A couple of the cover versions showed up on a cd a few years back called "Golden Throats". This was a compilation of bad cover songs by Andy Griffith("House of the Rising Sun"), Sebastian Cabot ("Like a Rolling Stone"), and Jack Webb's "Try a Little Tenderness". Bill Shatner did "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" and "Mr. Tamborine Man". But elsewhere on "The Transformed Man" you get his interpretations on some of the Shakespeare classic solioquoys, as well as "It Was a Very Good Year" and the best tune called "Theme from Cyrano", it has to be heard to be believed!
All in all, a very fun record to check out.

PS: If you wanna hear Bill Shatner rap, rent "Free Enterprise" and fastfoward to the end.

I heard some of this stuff a few months back. My best friend downloaded some of it, and we sat around on a Saturday afternoon while the wives were away, laughing so hard our faces and sides hurt.

You think the songs are funny

You should see Bill performing them live on TV when it all came out. It was taht one show that the Beattles went on. What is taht guys name? I am drawing an f'n blank. You know, the guy who said "And now for a really big show" Anyway, Bill is singing, I mean talking, "It Was a Very Good Year". Damn, it was the funniest thing I ever seen. At points it looked like he was tyrying to pinch off a 10 pound loaf through a colostomy tube. And the audience is smiling, but you can see they are all sitting there thinking "What is this fresh hell?" And when he was done, you can tell people are looking at each other like "Is he done?' And the only reason they are clapping is because they are on TV and the big APPLAUSE sign is on. I think I was watching it on a Biography special about him. Hey, don't get me wrong. Shatner is THE MAN! But damn, I don't know what he was thinking. I think I read somewhere he said that the only reason he did it was becasue alot of the Star Trek cast was releasing an album, and he was thinking "We are actors. Not singers." and he did it as a goof. I mean Spock, Uhura, and Sulu was releasing albums with Grammy winning songs like "The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins". That reminds me. If you think Shatner was bad, go and watch the video that Nimoy made for Bilbo the Hobbit". Damn, it is spock on the desert mountain that Kirk fights the lizzard dude on. It was also in Bill and Teds Bogus Journey. And the song is jsut bad too. Who the hell ever thought that a song called The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins would be a hit. So anyway, see the video versions and you will laugh your ass off too. It is like watching Jim Neighbors singing, but funny. It is also like spanking your monkey with a cheese grater. Slightly amusing, but mostly painful. Here are the lyrics:

The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins

In the middle of the earth in the land of the Shire
lives a brave little hobbit whom we all admire.
With his long wooden pipe,
fuzzy, wolly toes,
he lives in a hobbit-hole and everybody knows him.

Bilbo! Bilbo! Bilbo Baggins
He's only three feet tall
Bilbo! Bilbo! Bilbo Baggins
The bravest little hobbit of them all

Now hobbits are a peace-lovin' folks you know
They don't like to hurry and they take things slow
They don't like to travel away from home
They just want to eat and be left alone
But one day Bilbo was asked to go
on a big adventure to the caves below,
to help some dwarves get back their gold
that was stolen by a dragon in the days of old.

Bilbo! Bilbo! Bilbo Baggins
He's only three feet tall
Bilbo! Bilbo! Bilbo Baggins
The bravest little hobbit of them all

Well he fought with the goblins!
He battled a troll!!
He riddled with Gollum!!!
A magic ring he stole!!!!
He was chased by wolves!!!!!
Lost in the forest!!!!!!
Escaped in a barrel from the elf-king's halls!!!!!!!

Bilbo! Bilbo! Bilbo Baggins
The bravest little hobbit of them all

Now he's back in his hole in the land of the Shire,
that brave little hobbit whom we all admire,
just a-sittin' on a treasure of silver and gold
a-puffin' on his pipe in his hobbit-hole.

Bilbo! Bilbo! Bilbo Baggins
He's only three feet tall
Bilbo! Bilbo! Bilbo Baggins
The bravest little hobbit of them all

Thank God Jackson didn't put this anywhere in the trilogy.

Okay, if you go to that link, above the lyrics there is a Real Audio of the song. The background music sounds like the theme to the Addams Family. Here is the link to the Real Audio. Listen if you dare:

Nimoys Bilbo the Hobbit song

All things considered, I didn't like it, but I didn't hate it either. With some work it could have been better (The Bilbo Baggins song, that is).

Shatner knows his voice sounds abrupt, jerky, and off-beat. He makes money off it. Maybe it was different then, but now its a gimmick he can exploit, and has often been seen doing just that on tv commericials and shows like "3rd Rock From The Sun" in which he plays the oblivious alien leader "The Big Giant Head".

I will agree though that Shatner is no singer, he's over the hill, and is probably trying to remain in the lime light by taking any offer he can get and/or by doing something he's not good at (singing).

He wants people to know he still exists. He's William Shatner and he doesn't want to give it up.

I guess I was a glutton for punishment cause I listened to the song 6 times in a row. All I can say is I shoulda taken my chances with the cheese grater. And no one get mad at me for posint the link to it. I DIDN'T WRITE OR SING THE DAMN THING! I am just trying to bring a little love to the world.

I don't honestly think people would be that upset with you. Unless of course you want them to pretend they are. But what kind of warped thinking is that? 😛

Also, William Shatner is like Ric Flair of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). He's well known, has many achievements, and he's still around when perhaps he should call it quits before he starts embarassing himself (starts? 🙄 )

No offense to Ric Flair though. I'd rather keep him around. He's actually still entertaining dispite his age.

Celtic. You didn't think it was bad

I have heard people break wind with more rythim than that. He shoulda been arested on the spot. And Shatner is about to kick ass here soon. David Kelly is coming out with a sequel to his series THE PRACTICE and Shatner is a star. From the rumors he kicks ass in it. I think that is why they are setting up Nimoy for the Priceline adds. Shatner is going to be too busy for them now. He has that series, plus he is the owner of a special effects house/animation company called C.O.R.E. (C.O.R.E. website)in Canada that is poised to replace Pixar for Disney. At least that was the news I heard a few months ago. but they have done work on X-men, and other films. So Shatner is still whooping some major butt.
