The world we live in today

I would guess that it means that most people here in NYC are unwilling to get involved in a violent crime in the subway, likely out of fear that the perpetrator might be armed. I agree that it is a rotten state of affairs.
 
You're right Milagros, in today's world, many people are reluctant to get involved for a variety of reasons: legal repercussions, is the person is armed, or worse psychotic?

It's a much different world we live in than when we were kids.
