Being the huge Rush fan that I am and a drummer I can say that Peart is easily one of the best Rock drummers out there. But best ever. I doubt it. He's up there with his contemporaries John Bonham, Carl Palmer, Mike Portnoy, Danny Carey, Phil Collins (Check out Brand X or his early Peter Gabriel stuff and he was the shit in his heyday.)
But there are so many styles like with Jazz. There is a massive style difference with drummers like Billy Cobham, Lenny White, Max Roach, and of course Buddy Rich (Which I can remember Neil saying he's been trying to do some of Buddy's tricks for "years" and hasn't even come close.)
And of course then there's latin jazz/rock drumming in which case in my opinion...there can be only one!
