Apparently someone also had a camera phone outside the bus....

I wish we could have seen more from before the camera was turned on, but I did watch this thing for a second time and have some observations. Seems pretty clear that the black man sees the old man as a racist, but what gave him that idea, we may never know. The old man does get up and attempts to walk away from the situation, seating himself near the front of the bus. Now he's not completely blameless, because he is jawing with the guy the entire time. But it is clear that the black man throws the first punch. Once that happened, the old man had a right to defend himself.
Sticks and stones... Words are never justification for striking someone. Once that strike was thrown, that jaw became open game.
Edit: The old vet could have done better to stop fueling the situation with his mouth as well though, yeah.
