So yesterday, about 36 hours ago, I was going to a doctors appointment at 10am, and I was running late. I get to the area, and actually pulled into the wrong parking lot, but figured I should park there anyway, so I go around and there a no empty spaces, so I have turn around and go someplace else. As I was turning my car around, I must of lost track of where I was and I backed into one of the parked cars. I pulled out to see the damage, but I couldn't see any. A couple was walking by right there and the guy said 'there was no damage', but the girl was looking at me like I just ran over a baby or something. The car I backed into was did not belong to the couple. As I was looking at the car I backed into the guy said again, he didn't think there was any damage. I could see scuffs or dirt or something on both sides of the bumper, but I didn't know which side I hit. I didn't even know where I hit the car, I thought I just grazed that plastic thing holding the license plate. I have no idea.

When the couple got in there and started to pull out, I drove off into another parking lot, (couldn't sit there otherwise they couldn't get out). So as my heart was beating a mile a minute, I panicked and just went to my doctors appointment, waiting for like a half hour (of course, leaving me to sit and think what just happened), after my appointment, at around 10:45am, went back outside, no police anywhere, so I went back to look at the car i hit, and it was gone.

All I know is that the car I hit was a red van. I also don't know if the couple that saw this happen wrote down my license plate number or not. I didn't see them take out a pen and pad, but I have a photographic memory, so maybe they didn't have to.

This happened Friday morning, do you think if that couple got my plate number and called the police, I would have heard something by now? This all seems to rest on whether or not this couple got my plate number or not. All I know is I hit a red van, that doesn't help anyone.

If I were to report it, how many red vans are out there? I have a witness saying there is no damage, and I didn't see any either. I'm going pretty nuts over here. Should I try and forget about it or not?

What should I do?

I thinking of reporting it tonight to my local police station just to clear my conscience if anything.

If there was no damage, I say no harm no foul. Even if a witness comes forward, there's no damage to the van or your car, so therefore no proof.

if there was a witness and they turned ya in u most likly you would have heard from the cops by now.same thing happened to my sister and the cops showd up at her house not long after

I was thinking of that, but would the witnesses wait until next week. Maybe to give me time to report it. Would someone actually wait to report something like that?

Take a chill pill and don't worry about it.From what you posted it sounds like no damage was done and i doubt the owner of the van will ever notice. It sounds to me like you did everything right.

that is possible but i do not think it will happen tho i think it will be fine and u can go about your life or if u feel the need report it but i dont think ther is no need to do that sounds like there are no dammage and no harm done

The owner of the van probably would never notice. It's this couple that the whole thing is what I'm worried about, what if they left a note on the van's windshield or reported my plate number to the police.

Not knowing the population of your area, it’s difficult to know what page of the local paper this incident might land on. Where I live, you’re lucky to get out of a parking lot with your life.

My suggestion is you have a couple of beers and relax. Unless the person who owns the vehicle you hit files a complaint, you’ll never hear a peep, and most likely that would have happened by now.

Meh, just put it out of your mind. Even if you did report it, leaving the scene of an accident is a crime so you'd just get yourself in trouble. Does the couple have anyway to identify you?

Only if they copied down my license plate number.

And if I did report it, what would I be reporting? "i hit a red van in that parking lot", does that really help police at all?

The guy looked at it and said no damage done right? The woman sounds like she is wound too tight for her own good.I've been on both sides of this, and it just ain't nothing to worry about as long as you did no visible damage. The cops have more important things to worry about.

Have you ever had your house or apartment broken into?I have, and you know what the cops do?They come around when they have the time, take a report for the insurance company and forget about it.

You did not leave the scene of an accident, you did something that happens thousands of times every day.

Well, I went across the street to my doctors appointment, but then I did come back. Technically I did leave I guess.

ha. I slammed into the ass end of a parked red van with my Mercury Grand Marquis about a year ago.

I just went about my business. There was no damage. As someone said; no harm, no foul.

Don't stress it like Buggy said. The police won't worry about it either since they have more pressing business. Think of it as you kicking a football and it hits the side of my house on a bounce. No dent in my siding means no harm actually done and I would probably never even hear about it from passersby.

You drive a Mercury Grand Marquis? You poor poor child.😛

You don't sound like your conscience is bothering as much as you are worried about getting in trouble. :blaugh:

I wouldn't sweat it one bit. They did not take your lic # and if they had it wouldn't be under the pretense of "well hunny, we'll just keep this until Mondy and let that nice person report it". Besides, if he was pissed he would have either gave you shit right there, or called the police right there. And yes, they would have talked to you by now, if they knew. This will be the last you hear of it.

For future reference, put your car in park, step out and look for yourself if there is any damage. You can't see shit in a rear view. If you had did some damage that you want to claim but are on the way to an appointment like that, slip you name and number under the wiper for them to call you.

To wrap up, don't sweat it.

If I got back to my car/van and noticed someone had grazed it, I'd put it down to bad luck and move on. The driver of the van is unlikely to go to the police, and without the driver voicing his opinion I can't see much happening.

I did!

100 bucks and it drove like a dream.

I cried when it got taken away. 🙁

I drive an Intrepid now, thankyouverymuch. 😛

Dude, most people have done this in their lives, myself included. Sounds like no big deal. Now if you'd put a nice size dent in the vehicle, sure, leave a note with your contact info like any responsible human being. But you didn't, so no biggie. Calm down, get some rest, and this will all blow over.

That is kinda true. I don't want a week to go by and then two cops show up at my front door...that would kinda suck.

The only thing I would have done differently is to actually get out myself and inspect for any damages. Don't rely on someone else's perception. Maybe that guy is blind as a bat. If there was any hint of damage, I would have then left a note and contact information for the owner of the car to get into contact. Then go on with your life.

That being said, don't stress it. Sounds like there was no damage and you'd have probably heard something by now. And even if there was damage, this isn't a hit and run, you just nicked a parked car. Its a small-claims civil court matter at the most, and the damages would be miniscule.

I didn't get out of my car, but all I had to do was to look outside my window and I could it fine.
