Out of curiousity, how does the thread rating system work?

I have tried rating a few threads, but nothing seemed to happen, or does it take time to gather the different ratings?
 
Well I think it takes at least 2 thread ratings to put it into effect. We could try it out now with this thread as I have rated it once just now.
