The biggest danger with ticks is getting Lyme Disease. Trust me, you don't want it.
indeed, it is. thanks to that shit, i'm a statistic. one of the few that actually survived it. if it wasn't for my mom's concern about the bulls eye mark on my chest years ago, i wouldn't be here.
an Eagle Scout's advice: if you can burn 'em, good. if you take them out with tweezers, be gentle and make sure you get the head as well. if you don't want to burn or tweeze them out, a little Vaseline around the body will (normally) make the tick get out on it's own, as that cuts off air to the little bitch.
as far as i know, the main carrier of Lyme Disease are deer ticks (Ixodes scapularis) and are commonly found in wooded areas and don't seem to be restricted to any specific region. they are also commonly known as the black-legged tick.
another issue with ticks is tick paralysis. it is uncommon, but it does happen, and can be fatal. tick paralysis happens during feeding, and dissipates after the tick is removed.
wow...entomology club, here i come!
