Hypathetical situation: Say that you are on the internet (AOL for example). You pretend that you are a student in school and doing a project on tickling. You IM people, asking them to help. Some say yes, some say no. The ones who say yes, you ask them a bunch of questions about their ticklishness (some pay be leaning towards the perverted side, but not enough where they quit helping). If someone says that they dont want to help anymore, you stop and say thank you, bye.

Would that constitute in doing anything wrong? I know it is a little shady to be lying about a school study. On the other hand, it is not like you are harassing anyone who doesnt want to be bothered, nor are you trying to meet anyone in real life...What does everything think or know?

As long as what you're posing as is a college age student, I think you'd be safe legally. But, if you're posing as a minor, you cross the line into an area where you put both yourself and the people you're surveying at risk. Frankly, I think you should pose as yourself instead, ask all the questions people will answer and go from there. Those who are going to answer are likely to answer either way. But, now, you don't have to sweat the legalities.

Being an MP and security gaurd I know a bit about the legal system.

The words "perception is reality." seem to come to mind here.

If you pose as a minor, or you tell someone that you are from "blank and blank" university. Then yes. You could very well be crossing a thin line.

I very much doubt if anyone found out that they would take it that far.

To clear it up...

I am talking in the context that "I am from such-and-such university". It really isnt too far off, since I am only out of College for 2 1/2 years now; however, I guess still misleading. Anyways, I felt the same way where I really doubt anything would ever happen out of it, since there are SO many people on the internet sending spam, or junk mail, etc...
