There doesn't ever seem to be many Uk people kicking around and even fewer north of the border

Agreed. I sometimes think it's harder when people don't give any indication about where they are as well. But have you tried the tickle-brits website (I believe it's related to this one, but run separately and by fellow Brits) - at least it helps narrow things down a little. I still find it a little intimidating to get into, but the fact it's more local helps, and I have started posting to the various fora a little now.
