Just watching these terrible events unfold in our capital tonight is beyond words!, to all London TMF-ers, stay safe and hope your all ok

I seem to be in luck, most of the rioting/looting is happening in the north and east of London, I'm west so doing OK. I'm just hoping the police can sort it out, I'm honestly not sure if theres enough of them.

Okay. I'm out of the loop, and I don't have access to a television.

What's going on?

Long story short: some guy gets shot by police, official reports suggest he opened fire first, no problems so far. However, some locals take exception to this, claims of police oppresion start to surface, a group of locals rally outside a police station demanding answers concerning the aforementioned shooting. This rally turns violent, police cars and shops get torched. This was a few days ago. Every night since, cars and shops have been torched and theres been widespread looting in parts of North and East London, but I'm hearing that this has spread as far into West London as Ealing (where I live). I've never seen anything like it, my parents tell me its the worst riots they've seen in the UK for 30 years. Theres also been rioting outside of London, in Birmingham and Liverpool in particular. I'm seriously hoping someone sends in the army to deal with these fuckers.

To be honest, I'm surprised I haven't seen more of this in the US.

I've heard of some small-scale occurrences... but not much more than that.

I've been reading this a little bit. It's pretty crazy. This was the first article that I saw that drew my attention.

http://www.redpepper.org.uk/tottenham-this-is-what-you-get-fire/

In Tottenham, as the media makes 'scenes of looting' its focus, the original act of horrific violence that this is all really about starts to get lost.

This is about a community enraged by the police killing a man named Mark Duggan. The media have been quick to call the 29-year-old a 'gangster', despite the utter lack of evidence for that assertion.

The known facts are that the father-of-four was shot twice in the face on Thursday by a police officer wielding a Heckler & Koch MP5 sub-machine gun. (Few have rushed to condemn that violence.)

Semone Wilson, Mark's girlfriend, said: 'I spoke to him at about 5pm and he asked me if I'd cook dinner. He said he spotted a police car following him.

'By 6.15 he had been gunned down. I kept phoning and phoning to find out where he was. He wasn't answering.

'I rushed down to where it happened. They let me through the police lines but they wouldn't let me see his body.'

Some witnesses report that Duggan was lying on the ground when he was shot.

An eyewitness told the Evening Standard: 'About three or four police officers had both men pinned on the ground at gunpoint. They were really big guns and then I heard four loud shots. The police shot him on the floor.'

Yesterday (Saturday), hundreds gathered to demand justice for Duggan, marching from the Broadwater Farm estate where he lived to Tottenham police station.

They asked for someone to come out and speak to them. A resident told the BBC that a 16-year-old girl approached police to ask questions - and they 'set upon her with batons'.

Then people got really angry. As the fires started, they were chanting a simple demand: 'We want answers'.

They deserve those answers. And those who tell them to be calm and wait for the IPCC inquiry might reflect on the record of that useless organisation.

Because this is not just about Mark Duggan. This is about Smiley Culture. This is about Ian Tomlinson, Jean Charles de Menezes, Harry Stanley and so many hundreds more...

Martin Luther King said 'a riot is the language of the unheard'. The people on the streets of Tottenham are not 'violent' criminals with some burning hatred of Aldi. They are part of a community that has been pushed to the edge by the very real violence of the police.

As one rioter, Jamal, told Channel 4 News: 'We're here to tell the police they can't abuse us, harass us. We won't put up with it. This is just the beginning, this is war, and this is what you get - fire.'

There's more to the article in the link

The first thing I flashed on when I heard what was going on in London was hearing about the Watts riots in Los Angeles on TV when I was a kid, living very safely in a vanilla suburb 3,000 miles to the east at the time. (Thursday will be the 46th anniversary of that event).

My heart goes out to any Londoners present. I can imagine this must be ultra-scary.

To be honest, I'm surprised I haven't seen more of this in the US. ...

Hey, you're talking about a nation of people most of whom did nothing whatsoever when it became clear that a presidential election had been gamed. Or when the man who tried to steal another presidential election much earlier on had just dodged accountability by getting a pardon from his then-vice-president.

Seriously, when the Poles decided they'd had enough of their Soviet overlords' bullshit in the early 80's, they launched a general strike. I can't see that kind of thing ever happening here. (On the other hand, shout-outs and hi-fives to any Verizon strikers who may be reading this!)

The police beat up a 16-year-old girl in the streets, which caused more people to get pissed. But the video I saw on YouTube is so shaky, can't really see anything.
Seems like the whole world is going through a bad time. There's protests and potential revolutions going on in a lot of countries.

What is pissing a lot of brits off is that if this was the USA, they would send in the National Guard like they did in the 1992 LA Riots, and other countries would resort to similar tatics, the UK???, oh no we cannot do that we'd upset and offend the local community and be taken to the Europeon Court of Human Rights......it's a fackin disgrace. Thats my rant about it over Amen

Now, maybe I'm just a raving looney, but I don't remember rioting and burning buildings to be a basic human right.

My area got hit last night, went out to get a newspaper earlier...devastation...feel so gutted. 🙁

I'm glad I left London. The government are as much of a disgrace as the rioters. The city is under siege and all Theresa May and the pm can say is we want to police by consent?!

You are right camble the government and police's hands are tied because of the stupid EU. I say it's about time we stop paying for it and allow our country to do what it pleases, by that I mean enforce the law properly and rebuild the economy. Unfortunately the rioting has made the economy worse off in terms of small businesses, and who in the hell would want to start a business in London after what just happened?! I also wouldn't be surprised if after the disaster in Enfield, Sony pulls out which in turn will lead to more job losses....

You can also listen to a BBC interview with two of the rioters here http://www.yo utube.com/watch?v=IjdhEvosC3I
There are two women who are blaming 'rich people' and 'conservatives' as reasons why they're destroying so much. Strange, you never hear about conservative protesters looting and burning cars.

Another one of these arseholes was complaining that the riots were because the police didnt treat them with respect . apart from the fact that we probably have the softest police force in the world, as far as I know not one the buildings they burnt down was a police station.

Rioters will blame everyone but themselves. :sowrong:

Hope everything stops soon, it's bad when things like this happen. But I gotta say mates- the British government is being waaay too gentle with those rioters.

Yeah. I had to laugh when David Cameron said they would face " the full weght of the law" So it will be community service and anger management counselling then.

I saw a headline today that said "Boy with broken jaw robbed twice."

Here's to hoping there's an end in sight. =/

With respect, does it really sound like they know what they're talking about at all?

St Ann's Police Station in Nottingham, 2 nights ago. The wave of criminal idiots spread outwards from the capital.

The only funny part of this UK riot epidemic has been listening to US news "Anchors" struggling to pronounce the word "Tottenham".
