To any British members: What's July 4th like in Britain?

Sorry that might have sounded like a really random question. I just meant because July 4th involves Britain also, USA's independence from Britain. Ok nevermind 😛

i dont celebrate most days like this to be honest, i mean, yea,,something important may have happened how ever many years ago and people want to remember it so they choose that day to think about it, but if it was that important,...surely youde just remember it everyday?..... this time last year im sure somehting interesting happpened but it happened last year, ide rather think about whats happening now 🙂

this isnt a judgment on anyone else by the way, 🙂

We just sit around, sipping tea, eating bangers and mash and burning down puppy farms while thanks the French for giving those damned ungratful colonialists (TM) the aid needed to break away from the Empire. Saved us so much time and effort really as well as allowing us to upgrade the whole tone of it since we got rid of those blasted Virginians.

And a big 🙄 to anyone who thought I was being serious there. We don't really acknowledge it over here. Aside from that Will Smith movie.

yeah the film gets mentined a lot by people who think it's a new joke lol and it gets mentioned on a few radio stations i've noticed. i've not come across any designated celebrations though.

As a military campaign the Tet Offensive was a colossal failure for the Vietcong. They suffered massive casualties and gained little if any territory.

It was however a great propaganda victory for them, and helped fuel the anti war effort which was already gaining ground here in the U.S.

On July 4 1776 the Continental Congress in the British colonies signed the Declaration of Independence. This ignited the American Revolutionary War and led to the creation of the United States.

We call it Independence Day here. But I wouldn't expect it to be highly regarded on your side of the pond.

No. They signed in on the second, and became officially recognized on the seventh. Nobody really knows why the fourth was chosen.

Not to pick at nits here, but the Revolutinary War began in 1775.:upsidedow

The date on the top of the document itself is "July 4, 1776." That seems like a good reason for choosing the 4th, lacking anything more obvious.

Congress approved the resolution on the 2nd. The 4th is when they approved the final wording.

Which makes the fact it turned the war on it's head even more astonishing. Going by what I've read everything the Viet Minh did during the conflict was a colossal failure, it must be the only war in history ever to have been lost without the victors winning a single battle. But that's a thread for another time. I take your point about it being a bad analogy, and thus respectfully withdraw it and replace it with the following:

"Do you people celebrate the date the Canadians sacked Washington D.C during the War Of 1812?"

PS: Canada! Fuck Yeah!

It's also the day we celebrate Tom Crusie's birthday. Will Smith indeed!

JULY 4 is just another day here, nothing much, in this MULTI CRAP
CULTURAL world we have all sorts of odd people want to celebrate
something irrelevant, gives them an exscuse to get drunk and feel
important (i.e INDIA DAY - ST PATRICKS DAY - ST DAVIDS -
ST ANDREWS - BASTILLE DAY - CINCO DE MAIO and and and and)
like religion we PROPER ENGLISH dont actually take these events seriously.
Recently had a celebration for MANDELA reaching 90, what the F%%K has
that got to do with us or any country for that matter, i believe we in
ENGLAND have the least amount of PUBLIC or BANK CLOSED NATIONAL
DAYS certainly in the WESTERN WORLD, not lost many wars, so not much
independence to remember, and no saints here, think SPAIN stole them all,
they have a saint for all 365 i believe.

Sooooo in RANTING conclusion, no July 4 is in our minds as your day from
a media event point of view.

Nope, it is barely mentioned here. It's not our day, so we don't care/bother.

seeing as how it's an american holiday i would think that the brits wouldn't really care. sort of like Boxing Day doesn't mean anything to the US. but i guess that's been said enough times already huh?

No. They signed in on the second, and became officially recognized on the seventh. Nobody really knows why the fourth was chosen.

I believe they officially started signing on the 2nd, but the majority of them signed on the 4th, so they made the 4th the official day. and why would britain celebrate the day they got their ass beat? doesnt make sense.

Yep BOXING DAY perfect example AURORA, what a strange reason that
holiday is for "GORD BLIMEY FANKS GUVNOR" , and the Scottish
have JAN 2 to recover from getting DRUNK OFFICIALLY

Yea its brilliant 🙂

July 4th is irrelevant to us, its nothing to celebrate we lost, you won, end of.

We decided to focus on our aquistion of asia anyway since none of the people there had flags :woot:

But France celebrates the day they defeated themselves, which may be the only time France won a war against anyone.
