Today's Music Industry

Azrael, welcome to the forum and thanks for contributing to the threads. The good thing about your taste in music is that you don't stick to one style... I mean, Metallica AND John Denver. You've got a good head on your shoulders... what scares me are those who think N'Sync are greater than The Beatles.

I hate N'Sync, I love the Beatles, and I've been a forum member for several years.

I just... doubled my post count in the past half hour.

Today's Music Industry...

I may be wrong, but I believe the reason why today's music is so bland compared with that of let's say, twenty-five years ago, is that there is too much corporate control of industry anymore. Before, you had many independent record lables with their own distinctive sounds, even if there were various artists recording on those lablels. The independent record companies had their own house bands giving them their signature sound. For example, take a close listen to the old Motown recordings, and you will find that the background instruments always had a distinct sound, unlike any other recording from other labels. That also holds true for old records from the Atlantic label. But now since Motown and Atlantic are now owned by two of five major media corporations that control all the mainstream labels(Motown by Universal, and Atlantic by TimeWarner), you don't have that distinctive independent sound anymore. Also, you have today's artists and their producers taking the melodies from older records from the 70s and early 80s and coming up with their own banal lyrics. This is what I call "artistic laziness". The industry term for what I described is "sampling" which was primarily used in rap records, but is now prevalent in many pop and R&B songs, or what passes for R&B. What you have to look for if you want new and original music is either an alternative or college underground radio stations, or from the remaining independent labels online. So that is my two cents on the subject. I am very welcome to any response.

MAJ is right. Listen to a Motown hit from the 1960's back to back with an Aretha Franklin hit from that era (she was with Atlantic Records) and you could hear the difference in musicianship. Both sounded great, but were unique to their own record label. You can take any pop song today and just interchange the vocalists.

And would someone please tell me why some dunderhead tried to update Seals & Croft's "Summer Breeze" with a hip hop beat? That's like trying to add rap in the middle of The Beatles' "Hey Jude". Don't mess with the classics! (I know, it brings classic songs to a new generation... then why don't they repaint the Mona Lisa so she's wearing a tube top)?

Re: David Sylvian
Go to Amazon and/or Barnes & Nobles and listen to some samples!

I just saw David Sylvian's website and I've decided to buy the "Dead Bees..." album. I'm sure I'll love it. Thanks for the info, Socksoff.

I hope you like it.It was his last album.Let me know what you think!
If you like it,I might recommend the next cd to be "Gone To Earth"
A very progressive "atmospheric" CD which was a double LP in 1986.
Half the CD is vocal pieces and the other half is instrumentals.
Also, his first solo album "Brilliant Trees" is also good.
Only after those titles would I recommend the CD "The First Day",It is very different from the others.(He collaborates with lengendary guitarist Robert Fripp on this one).

Sylvian and Fripp also released a Live CD of the "The First Day" Tour.
That title enludes me for the moment.

Hope you enjoy Dead Bees!

Dead Bees mixed with Vanilla Soy Milk makes a wonderful taste sensation. I was going to buy the CD yesterday when I got my bill for this computer... $1880.00! I thought I'd better pay the bill first... I'll pick up the CD today, or at least order it if it isn't in stock.

I just happened to hear a brief bit of Britney's version of "My Prerogative" on the XM satellite station last night... thank goodness there are over 200 other channels to choose from.

This CD is very much an upbeat one lyrically for David as he married and had a child in the period between this CD and his past work.
(Examples are the lyrics for "I Surrender","Thalhiem","The Shining of Things" and "Darkess Dreaming"

"Pollen Path" has the atmospheric music that is prevalent on most of his past recordings. He's very into unique instruments with a "sometimes" slight oriental feel."Krishna Blue" and "God Man" are other examples using various percussion instruments.

"Wanderlust" is intersting new piece.
There is some sampling of other artist's works slipped in on "Midnight Sun" (John Lee Hooker) and "Krishna Blue"(Moody Blues)

Sylvian likes to also incorporate spoken word from outside sources.(Not on this CD) ,but he does use a famale singer Shree Maa for a song called "Praise"

Socksoff, due to my paying the bill for this computer, I decided to order the CD from the Circuit City website, just so my income could accumulate a bit. I was able to listen to a few choice cuts and it is a nice album. So, thank you for the recommendation and I'll let you know when I receive it. I'll give it a proper listen when it arrives, probably play it while I'm online.

I heard his album "Conversations" is fascinating. I think that's the title. Jazz should really be appreciated more... except Kenny G. Whoever labeled him as jazz should have their ears superglued shut. (I know at least one person will respond unfavorably to that...)

From my prespective, I still listen to the same music I did in HS and early college. IMHO, it seem like alot of the talent deteriorated since 1985. Sure there was some good stuff recently but it seems like it was more few and far between.

Frankie, I read you mentioned some of the teens actually embrace the classic groups like Led Zep, King Crimson, Aerosmith et al. My 18 year old nephew came to visit me last week and he tells me that of all the stuff he could listen to, he listens to my LP's I gave him. The only reason why I gave them to him is b/c he actually has a turntable. Anyway, his favorite album is the live Led Zep album "The song Remains the Same"

Giantfan, I found an old blacklight Led Zeppelin poster I had from years ago. I gave it to one of my client's 17 year old son. Passing the torch, so to speak.

I think I had that same poster. Holy Shit! I was kind of doing the same thing with my LP's. I passed them on to somebody who could enjoy them. It warmed my heart when he told me the other day that those Led Zeppelin albums are his favorites and all his friends encourage him to play them. His fave song from the live album is "Moby Dick"

Can you imagine if Led Zeppelin's management made them do silly dance steps the way N'sync did? The music industry is run by no talent suits who have no business producing "talent". No one really speaks their mind anymore the way John Lennon or Frank Zappa did. The performers today are still answering questions like, "What's your favorite color?" and "Which actor/actress makes you swoon?" If someone is speaking their mind, please enlighten me. (I just remembered... The Dixie Chicks have taken a stand for what they believe and so has Linda Ronstadt. What can Britney say intelligently?)
