Top 100 Guitar Solos

The top ones are great but to me these are always somewhat of a populatity contest. I would have had more Clapton stuf like "Why Does Love Have to Be So Sad" with he was with Derek and the Dominoes. Others I like are "Cat's Squirrel" by Jethro Tull and "Emerald" by Thin Lizzy.
My all-time favorite though is from "Light's Out" by an outstanding guitarist named Michael Schenker with the british metal band UFO.
Big thumbs up on this list to "Crossroads" by Clapton and "Blue Sky" by the Allman Brothers!

i agree with most of the songs, but not the order they are ranked in

that list has several from Eddie Van Halen, which is pretty legit. But no C.C. Deville from POISON.....what a complete joke!!!!

WHAT The *%#!!*+#!! ???!!!

I read it thru twice & there was NO MENTION of:

1)Doc Watson's work on WILL the CIRCLE BE UNBROKEN..

2)ANYTHING by David Bromberg...6 OR 12 string Guitar

3)...I thought at Least I'd see Steven Stills' TREE-TOP FLYER or BLACK QUEEN

Whadda Crock!! 😡

BUG :devil2:
I'm only in it for the entropy :cool2:

ok where the heck is carlos santana??? i didnt see him or edgar winter either.... i mean frankensteine? come on now. and although jimmy page was an innovative guitarist. i would have gone with either jimi hendrix, or stevie ray vaughn, or the guitarists for freebird as number one... and i didnt see carlos santana on that list

49.
song: Europa
guitarist: Carlos Santana
band: Santana

I always liked Cinnamon Girl by Neil Young, but I always thought it was too short.

Ugh this annoyed me so much

Cobain was a decent guitarist but not enough to outrank on songs done by jeff beck, ry cooder, stevie ray vaughn and a shitload more. I was amazed pantera Floods ranked higher than cemetary and walk to be honest but i hate these damn biased listings. Yes SRV and beck was listed once but these guys were revolutionary. Im just glad richie blackmore got alot of listings

It reminds me when one of the mags ran top 100 guitarists of all time, 1 being halen, 2 being page and etc etc, now yes they were remarkable but theyre not as fast as say petrucci or satriani or vai or other technical aspects of the guitar where they lack and others excel, so are they basing on staying power? Cuz stairway is the most memorable song but is not complicated to play, with any pantera riff, you need to virtually play guitar you never learned before

What a complete bulls*t list!!!

They put Jeff Beck at #99????? And LISTED Zach Wylde, Kurt Cobain, and Mike McCready???????

Did these idiots from Guitar World ever hear of:

T-Bone Walker?
Buddy Guy?
Roy Buchanan?
Alvin Lee?
Link Wray?
Rory Gallagher?

Why not just list f#cking Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson??

Kurt Cobain did nothing more for music than make it acceptable for garage-band-level talent to get signed.

Anyhooo....

The Stairway to Heaven solo is not complicated, but it ranks as one of my faves. It's not about a million notes per second, but about impact. It's one of those solos that you have to play right if you do it live. Anyone who's been in a band knows that there are certain songs and solos that you can't "fudge". Stairway is one of them. Play it right, or don't bother.

My all time favorite solo is the first solo on Rush's long instrumental "La Villa Strangiato". The way it starts out as a Spanish-style thing and slowly builds up until it's blazing over the syncopated rhythm is astounding. Talk about impact! Of course, Alex Lifeson and Rush never get the credit they deserve, even though they influenced just about every band that calls itself "progressive".

ok i missed carlos sorry i see his name now.. but what about the guitarist from the band boston? there was some fine guitar work there. and really only one pete townsend mention? stevie ray and jimi both should have been much higher on the list.

Im just glad dimebag got 3 solos listed

gets the respect he deserved

Dear oh dear oh dear............

.......ok, one or two nods in the direction of the history of the instrument, steely dan,santana,Hendricks.....but....come one....why a total ban on jazz guitarists?.........who are these Rock Nazis who make up these lists?

....and while I'm at it.......

....what the fuck is Curt Cobain doing on this list? the guy could not wipe his own arse let alone play the guitar.

As ive seen with other lists, i believe they value popularity\staying power over actual skill, hence the lack of beck, more blackmore and petrucci\satriani

Pretty much says it all. Santana and B.B. King definitely have better solos than the ones listed; "Purple Rain" probably wasn't the best solo on that album. Any arbitrary 10 of Stevie Ray's might make the list. Always with you Always with me is my favorite off the Satriani "Surfing with the Alien" album. No George Benson is criminal though... and no Ernie Isley for "Who's that Lady"?

Not a solo, but I gotta go with Les Paul and his work with Mary Ford.

'How High the Moon' just knocks me right under the table when I hear it, and it takes some time for me to get back up.

'Via Condios' ranks up there too.

Good call, Red. Where do we start?

Kenny Burrell
Grant Green
Django Reinhardt
Charlie Christian
Wes Montgomery..............

Two come instantly to mind:

Paul Weller of The Jam on NEWS OF THE WORLD

Hugh Cornwall of The Stranglers on PRINCESS OF THE STREETS.

(whoops showing my age here)

As has been said, it seems pretty clear to me that this list was guaged more toward group and song popularity than actual guitar instrumentation. I mean, Jeff Beck squeaks in at number 99? Zappa didn't even break #60 out of a hundred. And I'm sorry, but Neil Young has no place whatsoever in any "best guitar solo" list. Stairway to Heaven is a definite classic, love the guitar solo, but I think we've all heard way better.

Neil Young ? Cinnamon Girl ? A great song, but one of the greatest solos ever ?

There should also be more Alex Lifeson on this list...La Villa Strangiato should be in the top ten, and most of the solos on the Grace Under Pressure album blow away many of the those on this list.

Can't argue with number one ! 🙂
