1. Saughter- In 1991, he was so real he got death threats.
2. Ric Flair
3. Rowdy Rowdy Piper
4. Triple H
5. Rick Rude

Honorable mentions to Ted DiBiase, Honky Tonk Man and Earthquake.

TOP 5 HEELS IN MY BOOK

5 TRIPLE H
4 RIC FLAIR & THE FOUR HORSEMEN
3 BOBBY "THE BRAIN" HEENAN
2 "ROWDY" RODDY PIPER
1 THE nWo

From A Wrestling Fan Since Bob Backlunds Reign!

1.Kevin Sullivan...Devil worship? How risque!
2.Harley Race...The toughest wrestler that ever lived.
3.The Iron Sheik...Remembered how you rooted for Sgt. Slaughter when he fought the Sheik?
4.The Dudley Boyz...The ECW version not the jokey WWE version, they spit on fans, started fights with them and threw babyfaces through FLAMING TABLES WITH THUMBTACKS SPRINKLED ON THEM!!!
4.Hollywood Hogan...HE not Steve Austin brought wrestling back to prominence with the NWO.

Honorable Mention: Ric Flair,Vader(WCW Version),Honkytonk Man,Col. DeBeers and The Fabulous Freebirds

From one who watched from 1970 on!

1.Waldo Von Erich (The most vicious!)
2.Rowdy Roddy Piper
3.The Sheik (The Original One)
4.The "Magnificent" Don Muraco
5.Killer Kowalski

Im not old enough to have watch him wrestle...

...but if Im not mistaken, Fred Blassie was routinely attacked by fans, wasnt he? That would almost have to give him the nod.

Slaughter was never sent "death threats"....

McMahon made that up for the media, as a reason the show was being moved to a smaller venue, when the real reason was the Gulf War ended quickly, while Sarge was still the character, and ticket sales were crap after that, forcing them to move to a smaller arena to make up for lack of sales, and so the original arena would not come across so empty for the PPV.

Top 5 Heels of all time?
--------------------------
5. Hogan- when he first joined the nWo

4. Hall and Nash- they made being heels cool again

3. Vader- crippling that guy, accidental as it was, was GREAT publicity, so to speak.

2. Freddie Blassie

1. Steve Austin

I have to throw another heel team in that mix....

Demolition- they rarely talked, came to the ring, kicked all sorts of ass, and went back to the dressing rooms...

No mention of Jake Roberts? Some wrestling critics have said how much of a vile heel he was in his heyday. He got pet snake Damien to bite Randy Savage at one point (I think) and used his snake to instill fear into biggest of opponents (Andre the Giant for one).

Poor Jake!

The problem with Roberts is that he was so unsuccessful in his career. That feud with Randy Savage in which he brought a cobra to the ring was in my opinion not that heated because every time they fought Savage would pin Roberts with ease after about 3 minutes. His snake instilled fear but what opponents have Roberts ever beaten? I think he beat the Honkytonk Man at a house show thats it. Wrestlers who dominated him (sit back this is a long list) were Randy Savage, Ricky Steamboat, Sid Vicious, The Undertaker, Sting, Andre the Giant, Earthquake, Kamala and thats just off the top of my head. Unfortunately Jake Roberts is being dominating by his most heinous villian of all today...hard drugs. Its sad to see Roberts get arrested, wrestling in the smallest promotions for money to buy those drugs and basically throwing his life down the tubes. For me Jake "The Snake" Roberts elicits pity not hatred.

Steve Austin?? 😕

Hey, Austin was a terrific heel back when he and Brian Pillman were teaming as the Hollywood Blonds.

The Rock was a great heel, at least until his catchphrases caught on and he had to turn face.

I'd also nominate Chris Jericho when he was in WCW, just for the "Man of 1,004 Holds" and "conspiracy victim" bits. Yeah, he was more funny than hateful, but at least he was an original.

Eddie Guerrero has always been a great heel, wherever he's gone. He can piss the crowd off just by the way he walks to the ring.

HEY!

Guys, I thought out my Jake Roberts post really well and it took some effort to type...cant anyone comment on it please? 🙁

My input won't be as significant, since I really did not start watching wrestling faithfully until 1997. I've seen a lot of the old school matches and PPV's to try and educate myself on the history a bit better, but obviously one who was not there all along will never fully grasp or understand it all.

That said, here would be my choices (and remember my limited time frame and exposure):

5. Triple H - Funny, talented, respectable, and can draw true heat. He knows and plays his role well.

4. Vince McMahon - Not a wrestler, no, but what he's done for the business from a heel perspective is unmatched. How do you really put someone over as a face? Put them against McMahon in any angle. Viola. The crowd will be behind them instantly.

3. Ric Flair - Dirtiest player in the game, right? Another one who could draw unbelievable heat. And he still does to this day.

2. Bobby Heenan - Honest to god he was the tops. And entertaining and funny as hell, too.

1. Rick Rude - I despised this man with every fiber of my being. He had to be doing SOMETHING right to get me to mark out that bad, even if in hatred.

Honorable mention also goes to Steve Austin. Granted, eventually everyone loved him so much DESPITE his heel stance that he became a face almost by force, but when his tide first rolled in during the mid to late 90's, for a while he was the reason wrestling became so damn big again. Kudos to anyone who can make that happen.

Mimi

I agree with mimi. Steve austin and the rock brought back wrestling to a newer level. But for some old school heels how about these guys:

5 KING KONG BUNDY
4 BIG JOHN STUDD
3 PAUL 'MR. WONDERFUL' ORNDORFF
2 ADRIAN ADONIS
1 ANDRE THE GIANT

The andre going evil was the best way to make him be in one of the greatest main events ever. REMEMBER WRESTLEMANIA III?.

From a Georgia/ southern perspective.....

1) the worst of the worst....when it came to wrestling heels in this area had to be "Abdullah the Butcher". Just the mention of that name was fearsome back in the 70's in this area; he was a one-man wrecking crew, and the more blood spilled by his opponents, the better he seemed to like it 😀

2) Other mega-heels I remember were of Ric Flair and his partners in mayhem, Gene & Ole Anderson ("the Minnesota Wrecking Crew")...I HATED those guys! 😀

3) Stan Stasiak (his trademark "heart punch" always made me cringe).

3) Kevin Sullivan and his demon horde; including "maniac" Mark Lewin

4) Lex Luger...his vicious battles with "babyface" Barry Windham were legendary throughout Georgia and Florida

...but Abdullah the Butcher was definitely the worst of the worst in this area....

***
To the poster who mentioned Jake "the Snake" Roberts. I honestly enjoyed watching Jake in his prime...he was a great talent, but sadly fell into the same drug snare that ended the lives of several of my other favs from those days. I'm honestly surprised Jake is still alive.....a very sad story 🙁

Koochee:I'll mention a few others you might know

1.Blackjack Mulligan
2.Blackjack Lanza
3.Crazy Luke Graham - use to deliver a taped thumb to the throat.
4.Wild Bull Curry-This guy was scarey! (A crazy man who would have been good at a hardcore match. He used to constantly drool.( A huge stream of spit out of his mouth!).

the top 5 heels of all time? here's my list.

5) Honky Tonk Man- he held the IC belt F-O-R-E-V-E-R and man, i couldnt wait till he lost it! it was funny watching the Ultimate Warrior beat him in less than 30 seconds.

4) Bobby "the Brain" Heenan- despite the fact he was a heel, i LOVED this guy. he was always funny as hell. especially on "Primetime" wrestling with Gorilla Monsoon. anybody remember the "Bobby Heenan Show" during that time. straight comedy....

3) Ric Flair- to be the man, you have to beat the man! enough said.

2) Vincent Kennedy McMahon- Vince knows how to be a heel and his rivalry with Austin was unbelievable. despite all the crap people say about him about the product of today, he is STILL the greatest wrestling promoter and one day, wrestling will be huge again!

drumroll.......1) Triple H!- why? when he became heel and turned into this dominant force, he ruled the wrestling world and his matches with Austin and Rock were MUST SEES!! he knows how to draw heel heat and despite the fact that he is the champ again (groan) he is still the best heel of all time. usually the babyface is the reason why people want to come to the main event. with Triple H, you came to watch him in the main event. he is truly the GAME!!

Electric Eye, as for your comment about Jake Roberts, it is sad to see Jake go down the toilet. he was a good performer and let drugs ruin his life. i hope he turns it around as he is a wrestling legend.

Ric Flair

Bobby the Brain Heenan

Ravishing Rick Rude

Rowdy Roddy Piper-Not sure if he counts, seeing as he did the whole anti-hero thing way before Austin, but the coconutting of Jimmy Snuka was priceless

The Million Dollar Man Ted Dibiase-I can't believe nobody's mentioned him yet,he was so great at what he did I don't think he ever played a face

I believe Dibiase was a face early on, and a face in the UWF before he went to WWE.

I remember Jake before he brought a snake into the ring. He was a face then as a mid carder in the NWA. His finisher wasnt yet a DDT, it was a knee lift of all things (almost as bad as the "Hands of Stone" punch and "Garvin Stomp" Ron Garvin used to beat people. It really shows how far wrestling has come). He has always done great interviews, but unless he had a wrestler of Savage's calibur carrying him, his matches were mostly mediocre at best. Sorry; I just never thought that much of him.

Damien was a python, the snake that bit Randy Savage was a cobra. Also something wasn't right. A viper (like the cobra) snaps in, bites and is out again in a second waiting for it's poison to do its job. That snake was snogging his arm. Some bugger had whipped either its fangs or poison sacks out and the snake got confused. Obviously they weren't going to let a really armed cobra bite him, but it's a dead giveaway.

Jake Roberts had the "X-Factor". It's indefinable. Some wannabe gets on stage, dances his heart out, sings till his lungs are raw and the crowd boo him off, even if he can perform. Frank Sinatra ambles on, fag in mouth and jacket slung over one shoulder, cocks an eyebrow from under the rim of his hat and the audience are on the edge of their seats before he's sung a note. That's the "X-Factor". It's like a 10 inch dick, you're either born with it, or you aren't. No amount of surgery will give it to you, only make a floppy imitation that looks crap in a porno.

Jake Roberts has this "X-Factor" more than any bloke I've ever seen in the ring. Some skinny, pot-bellied, balding old arsehole had more charisma than 10 other top performers you could name. He'd just stand in mid-ring, glare out over the top rope, point into the crowd and the atmos would kick like nothing you could imagine.

I do agree about him getting dominated though. The Tuesday in Texas match was a huge anti-climax after the cobra incident, as was how the Wrestlemania 8 match with Taker was handled.

My favourite heels...

1/ Ted Dibiase, because he was Hogan's opposite number for years.

2/ Sid Eudy (Sid Viscious/Sid Justice/Sycho Sid) Because I loved his personality as a heel. The raging, psychotic, deranged and unbelievably violent style was probably close to how I'd have handled a heel run.

3/ The Taker! He's gotta be there!

4/ Yokozuna. You remember how many people in the audience were crying on the night he almost collapsed Jim Duggan's chest cavity? Old Ronny was terrifying in his day. They didn't have a face to equal him. I'm a lifelong Bret Hart fan, but I found the match and culmination of Zuna's term as Federation Champion at WM 10 to be really crap and unbelievable.

5/ Bret Hart! When this guy turned heel after WM 13 I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. And I actually pissed myself laughing the night he took the title off Taker at the following Summerslam! That angle with Shawn twatting Taker with the chair was hillarious.

I don't know if I can name all five, and mention any that haven't already been mentioned, but the big one that comes to mind for me is Mr. Perfect, Curt Hennig. When I was little, I used to get incredibly angry everytime he'd get in a match, because aside from a few pay-per-views that I never saw, he never did lose on Primetime Wrestling. He had all those "perfect" promos, like where he threw himself a touchdown pass. lol 😛

I never really liked Hennig that much as a performer. He'd massively over-react to shots to the point where it looked really ridiculous. when he lost the IC title to Kerry von Eric at Summerslam 90, he went down to the TT's discus punch, but only after leaping in the air and spinning over twice in the opposite direction to the one the shot would naturally have taken him. It wasn't until he turned face at the Survivor Series in 1992 that he actually began to look good in the ring.

Jake "The Crack Addict" Roberts

Jim,FAG in the mouth? COCKS his eyebrow? Hey this is Sinatra were talking about! Show some respect im italian american ya know! 😉 Ha Ha! Seriously though your points about Jake Roberts seem to parallel mine. He did have charisma though and really knew how to work the crowd (according to DDP and Vince in Beyond the Mat). Also 17 years ago the DDT was the most devestating finisher of its era until the Undertaker killed it by sitting up after recieving one. After his feud with Savage in which he lost every match against him he went to WCW and attacked Sting which led to a coal miners glove match. Sting of course was victorious and in that other forum for top 20 greatest wrestlers its a damn shame that Sting wasnt mentioned by ANYONE!!!

Kevin nash, greatest heel of all time

Not only will you love to hate the guy. He has one of the laziest power bombs of all time.

Honky Tonk Man. Hands down.

"I'm Cool...I'm Cocky...I'm B-B-B-B-B-B-BAAAAAAD!"

The Sean Man

Hmmm.. Top Five Heels.... The Dows poses these greats...

5. Steve Austin (When leader of Alliance)

4. Kane

3. Vince McMahon

2. The Rock (when he was corprate heel, Rock Vs Mankind at Royal Rumble 1999 is all the proof you need.)

1. HHH, The guy is just perfect for everybody else to elevate off. He' just so hateable, a great wrestler, and without him we wouldnt of had some of the classic matches we have seen in the WWE/F

The funny thing about Austin as the Alliance heel is that he still got plenty of cheers...

Bret Hart got plenty of heat after his "screw America" speech...

I think Hassan is going to be a great heel... He has potential.

Good call on the old Taker, he had kids scared to death back in the day where he beat Hogan for the belt and put the Warrior in the casket.
