U.S. declares swine flu public health emergency

Did they say what the cause of it is ?
Viruses, just like any flu. The odd thing about this one is that previously swine flu hasn't been transmissible from human to human, but only directly from pigs to humans. This means the new strain can spread much more rapidly.

Don't worry about eating pork, BTW. The virus is transmitted only from living pigs. Any cooking process destroys it.

From what I understand, pigs are like little petri dishes for the flu. For whatever reason, the virus mutates very easily in pigs. This flu (again from what I have read) seems to be a super combo of a swine, avian and human flu. This is something that they have never seen before, too. I guess the human parts is what made it transmissible from human to human.

See if they spent the money on researching the flu instead of the smell of pigs. We'd be in better shape.

disease shall ravage the earth. and the conspiracies come into play. mwahhaha
Will America summon mass inoculations?!... i mean the vaccination industry gets massive kickback along with the pharmaceutical companies...
Another one of America's public health bureaucracy at play?!
PHARMACIA = SORCERY
Wasn't there a scare in the 1970s I read the Science Today article and it referenced that. Out a couple weeks ago. Will look for link.

Here are some facts from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention about how swine flu spreads in humans:

• Swine flu viruses typically sicken pigs, not humans. Most cases occur when people come in contact with infected pigs or contaminated objects moving from people to pigs.

• Pigs can catch human and avian or bird flu. When flu viruses from different species infect pigs, they can mix inside the pig and new, mixed viruses can emerge.

• Pigs can pass mutated viruses back to humans and they can be passed from human to human. Transmission among humans is thought to occur in the same way as seasonal flu - by touching something with flu viruses and then touching their mouth or nose, and through coughing or sneezing.

• Symptoms of swine flu in people are similar to those of seasonal influenza - sudden fever, coughing, muscle aches and extreme fatigue. This new strain also appears to cause more diarrhea and vomiting than normal flu.

• Vaccines are available to be given to pigs to prevent swine influenza. There is no vaccine to protect humans from swine flu although the CDC is formulating one. The seasonal influenza vaccine may help provide partial protection against swine H3N2, but not swine H1N1 viruses, like the one circulating now.

• People cannot catch swine flu from eating pork or pork products. Cooking pork to an internal temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit kills the swine flu virus as it does other bacteria and viruses.

Great... little did I know my sig pic would be so appropriate!

So bassically its just the flu with more pooping and puking .
It's also got an unusually high mortality rate - something between 2% and 6%, compared to less than 1% for normal influenza. 6% doesn't sound like much until you realize how fast the flu can spread. If even 1 American in 4 gets it, that's something on the order of 500,000 dead.

This is a flu strain people have never had

Its just like adults with chicken pox. Its potentially fatal for them because they never developed antibodies for it

I can see this being very high in fatality rates for young people, often sick and elderly

It could also do alot of damage to healthy people since they aren't accustomed to it. Who knows, maybe this is our generations' smallpox

this my friends is the begining of the end of the world..mark my words. this is some serious shit, and i have a strong feeling we're all going to get it eventually..and very few of us will survive.

i hope they have a shot or something for this soon before it gets to bad some friends of mine went to mexico for the weekend i hope thye are fine my nephu has been sick to hope it has nothing to do with this just keep ya hands clean and out of ya mouth and be caushous

No, that's not the reason for the high mortality rate. Different flu strains just have different levels of virulence.

In fact the highest death rate is among young adults with healthy immune systems. The problem is what's called a "cytokine storm."

Let's not go overboard. A 6% mortality rate is quite high for influenza. But it still means that over 90% of the people who catch it survive.

The "Spanish" influenza pandemic of 1918–19 infected one third of the world's population (or around 500 million persons at that time) and caused around 50 million deaths. Does this not remind you of Jesus' second coming?

:flatstare:

I knew there was going to be something that made people forget about the economy and unemployment. My friend told me that wouldn't happen until pigs flu.
if only there was some kind of oinkment to help with the symptoms...
