uploading video clips to the TMF

In about another week we're going to enable video clip uploads to our server so people can post their clips directly to the forum.

What file formats should I enable in order to give everyone the tools they need? Obviously avi, rm, wmv, mov, and mpg, but what else? zip probably, for files that exceed the size cap and have to be broken up.

I know there are some compression formats that people use too, what are the extensions for those?

Any other suggestions?

Im planning to start with the 2 MB limit and see how that goes, then if the bandwidth hit isn't too staggering I'll probably increase it.

I suggest .rar as well, Sir Jeff. Many at the Theater use WInrar to compress/split files, and rar is their extension. I can only assume it will be used by some here as well.

Yes, a suggestion: a standard nomenclature to reduce duplicate posts and reduce redundant downloads.

Yes, a suggestion: some sort of indicator (like a checksum on the file contents or something) that would also serve the same purpose; i.e., to uniquely identify a given clip; even something as simple as a 16 bit checksum would be useful. In fact, a single 8 bit checksum would be extremely useful.

Yes, a suggestion: some sort of thumbnail JPG associated with the clip, again, to reduce duplicate downloads

All suggestions, take them or leave them (most people ignore my suggestions anyway, so I'm used to it by now)

Sounds great, Jeff! I'll have to put my clips listing back up and start taking requests again. I'm in the process of updating it to make sure I have everything in there. I'll make it available for others to add their info. to as well, if people think it would be useful. It will have info. on each clip like I did before. So, people would have a way to check on the content of the vast majority of "sharable" clips. Those I don't have listed are mainly from pay sites who wouldn't want their stuff posted anyway.

Speaking of which...Are you planning on posting guidelines for what should/shouldn't be posted? Just curious. (Dumb question. I know. Just opening the door. lol)

Yes, I was already contacted by one producer who wanted to make sure their clips aren't posted. If any other producers are seeing this and worrying, there's no need.

We'll probably have a pretty narrow definition of what's ok and what's not, basically saying that anything that's copyrighted by someone else is not allowed, including stuff that was supposedly given away for free at some point. When producers release things for free on the net, it's usually for a specific purpose, to promote an activity, and I don't think there's any kind of implied permanant release of copyright there.

So unless I hear otherwise, or someone really convinces me that I'm on the wrong track, I'm probably going to want to restrict anything that belongs to someone who is clearly still trying to make a buck on the internet.

Right now I'm thinking I'd like to see it mostly be about posting mainstream stuff, because we miss a LOT of that, out of print "classics," and producers using it to promote their own material.

Well, I'm not in any position to give anyone their marching orders, but if you guys make clips, there will be a place to post them.

Maybe we could even have a video clips section of the mainstream forum, or do you think it makes more sense to just attach clips directly to posts within that forum? They're identifiable by the paperclip on the thread, so I don't think people missing them would be a problem.

Giving the mainstream clips their own place would (or should) cut down on the number of "Where is the clip" or "Is there a clip" posts, simply because all a person would have to do is look and see it. And it would keep all of the celebrity stuff in one area and keep the TMF organized. It would almost be like a mini Tickletown. And you could use the existing Video forum for the tickling video classic clips and other stuff that is already posted there.

I think that having a seperate section in mainstream would be cool. Then they wouldn't get lost in the jumble of VCR alerts, etc.

Also, those who are looking for specific clips...or looking to share them...would have a place to start. One suggestion (take it or leave it) if you do would be to ask that folks name the thread in which they post a clip by the title of the clip itself. Then, if folks are looking for that clip, they can find it by sorting the section by title. The vast majority of mainstream clips are titled by the show they're from. So, it may be a help. It may also help to minimize repeat posting of the same clip.

I asked Juggler to contribute to the mainstream section. For those who may not know he was one of the first to regularly post mainstream clips way back when and he probably has most of the old, hard to find stuff. He even sold a DVD for awhile with alot of that material on it.

I'm really looking forward to seeing this. We have a ton of mainstream stuff and are anxious to see if there's other stuff out there that we haven't seen yet. We will be sharing as much as possible of our stuff when this all pans out. (I'll post just my mainstream list for now and take requests if anyone reading this is wondering.)

Speaking of which... Jeff, is there enough capacity to handle everything if we put up a lot of stuff in a short time? Or, should we/I look at spacing things out a bit so we don't overload things. Just my practical mind asking questions again.

While I'm not 100% sure on my history I don't thing so. Juggler had a few AOL accounts where he would post mainstream scenes on a regular and rotating basis. I found them around 1996 when I first got online...he may have been going alot earlier than that! ( Quick google search only takes me back to 1999 on AMT.)

He was my main source until Tickle Town. He is the man...much the way dajerx is now!

Honestly Im not sure how much bandwidth this will consume, so maybe its better to start slow and give me a chance to track things. Adding images to the forum looks to have added about 150 gigs a month to our bandwidth usage, and we have about ten times that to spare, so Im not too worried. But on the other hand, anything can happen and it doesnt cost anything to be careful.

Ann, Juggler had his own gig if I remember correctly. Max had a list of scenes, but Juggler was the first that I am aware of to supply the physical media (in the form of CD's). I would love to see your list; between what you, wanto, me and my tag team partner Nontkl, toyou, Juggler, whatever OB has remaining from when me and him were working with Tickletown, Laz and Mimi....we should have just about every single scene ever (except for that scene of Rachel leigh Cooke tickling Rosario Dawson and Tara Reid on their sides on ET when Josie and the Pussycats was in theatres...I dont think i will ever find that one).

Actually....Max had a collection all put together as well as the list. That's why I was wondering. No biggie though. Just curious.

I'm in the process of updating the list to be sure I have everything on there...including length, file size and descriptions. Once our little get-together this weekend is over, I'll finish that up and post a copy.

Hmmm....here's a thought. I wonder if it would be practical for each of us to post copies of our listings in a sticky thread so folks know what we have?
