Using AI upscaling for tickling videos you own?

Over the years I have bought a lot of videos from C4S and other online stores, however a good chunk of these were from about a decade or more ago and so are in really low frame rates (480p, some even 360p)

Has anyone ever used any AI programs to upscale their old videos? If so which one(s)? I tried using flexclip, but it didn't seem to work for me!

It would be nice to watch them in better quality (some studios do offer HD versions, but a lot of the ones I have either the studio doesnt or aren't even in business anymore so its not an option)

Does anyone have any suggestions/experience with this?

I tried it on my rig on linux.

Honestly, as much as I'd like to tell you it made a difference, it doesn't change the core qualities of the videos. It can add some latency too.

And after investing your horsepower into however long it takes to process the "upscale", I found that the videos really had more trouble playing in VLC than just watching.

I tried the REAL video enhancer (that's what it's called). I hear handbrake can upscale though so maybe I'll try that.

Beats me dude when I'm horny I just watch on a tablet!

It depends on the original. With old stuff you really need to original master copy to be able to make a good remaster. Old videos would have looked full screen back in the day, but with 4k monitors they appear like thumbnails. When you increase the size you're literally spreading the pixels over a larger area and asking a computer to fill in the spaces, and AI is nowhere near good enough to be able to do that well. You lose definition and detail and it won't come out looking well. You could possibly double the size of a video, so your 480p will still be small, just a little less small.

I use Topaz software for some work I do and tried upscaling small videos that would have oriignally been 480p and it's not great. If you have a modern digital video and are upscalling that, then you can increase it really well and it's able to make videos come out perfectly.

Honestly though, not worth spending money to do unless it's something you REALLY fell you need to do. Modern videos still look pretty good just by clicking the "Maximise" button on the top right of the window. Old videos simple cannot look good using AI tech.
