Veganism

Internet is right; that's an excellent point.
Who gives a shit why someone does or doesn't eat something?

I don't give a shit why hoseman does or doesn't eat something. I was simply pointing out that the way he arrived at the decision is a little wonky. To equate a lack of conclusive and indisputable evidence against something with strong scientific evidence for that thing seems somewhat nonsensical. The whole fish don't feel pain or have emotions theory seems like BS IMO.

People use that kind of reasoning to justify their religious beliefs. I don't question why they believe what they believe;
so quibbling about why someone does or doesn't eat meat isn't something I bother with.

Just please don't pull the morality card on me and act like you're better than me because I like bacon and burgers while you munch on your kale and shitty meat substitutes, m'kay?

I realize there may be a tongue-in-cheek element to what you're saying here, but out of interest, has anybody actually pulled the morality card on you in this respect? Or is this more a pre-emptive strike sort of thing? lol

Just might!

lol Fair enough. One McKitty burger for chicago, coming up!

lol

In China, dog is considered a delicacy. And you have to order it a week in advance...

Yeah... They can be buggers to catch. 😛

@hoseman and cosmo
Interesting replies. Thanks. 🙂

I actually went vegetarian and later vegan for a little less than a year. It was not a pleasant experience. As it turns out, I have a minor soy allergy, and during my time as vegan I had replaced meat with lot of soy products. It is hard enough being vegan eating soy, and for me it would have been impossible without. Thus, I went back to eating meat. Now, I try not to over do it on meat products and eat more fruits and vegetables.

If you want to believe my theory is "BS" that's fine, but calling people out on an opinion based thread, because you have a differing opinion, is pretty much what trolling is on a forum. Send me clear, indisputable evidence that fish feel pain in the same way as a cow, goat, pig, ect.., and I'll buy what you're selling. Otherwise, it's my take on the matter and you should be respectful enough to keep your personal opinion on it to yourself.

Well that's a bit harsh. I assume you have clear indisputable evidence that I'm trolling? All I did was express an opinion on an opinion based thread. I certainly wouldn't want you to stop eating fish. I encourage people to eat animals of all kinds, especially the cute fuzzy ones!

But seriously, I'm not trying to troll you. I'm not a big animal rights guy by any means. Still, I don't see how pointing out that fish most likely can feel pain even without indisputable evidence is disrespectful. I suppose the BS part could be called disrespect. So let me change it from seems like BS to seems like it lacks merit.

Switch, I think you're confusing "feeling bad for the animals" and "animal rights". He wants to stop eating meat. Easier said than done. It's a process, not an ideology. Hoseman chooses fish. Of course, they feel pain.....but being yanked out of the ocean and dying pretty quickly is a lot different than, say, spending your life in tiny cage or rack or pen, where you can't even move, spending your whole life standing in your own shit.......it's just not comparable. "Cute and fuzzy" has nothing to do with it. (by the way, what's "cute and fuzzy" about a cow or a chicken? lol) I'll tell you what is proven: fish don't have great memories. By the time they're at one end of the tank, they've forgotten about the other. Like American politics! lol

If a person wants to ween themselves off of meat, for whatever reason, fish is usually the last stop. People stop eating meat for a variety of reasons and often a mixture of reasons. I know plenty of people on alternative diets, and they all have their own story and their own reasons why. Animal rights is not even the most common, I hardly hear that at all. In fact I hear that more from people who want to stop eating meat, but can't/won't. I've never once had someone proselytize to me about animal rights as I'm about to eat a steak....I think this is yet another fiction people project on to others who aren't like themselves. Xenophobia! "What? They don't eat meat? They must be judging me!" I find most people are actually reticent and shy about talking about it; to them it's a private choice.

Hoseman wrote a very detailed comment, answering the initial thread question.....and it looks like people just cherrypicked the line so that they could have an "in"....."aha! gotcha!" I say that because the rest of his comment is not an endorsement of going vegan! He wants - he needs - to continue to eat animal protein. He chooses fish as the "lesser of evils". It's not idealogy, it's practicality. You'd think people would give Hoseman credit for attempting to do something that they're all loudly professing they "can't" and "could never do", lol.

This thread reminds me of this thread:
http://www.ticklingforum.com/showthread.php?276489-BBW-Tickleing

The guy is interested in veganism and instead all you get is: "I eat meat I eat meat I eat meat", yeah we get it. Most of us do too. But then to pivot to "....and these people who don't eat meat are misinformed!" LOL! Actually, I think it's the other way around.

America has such a weight problem it's a national embarrassment. And meat prices are going to keep on going up in the coming century. So exploring different diets is maybe, just maybe, not such a bad thing. No one is coming for your double bacon cheeseburger deluxes, don't worry people. lol.

Oh snap, cheeseburgers are guns now lol Talk about misinformation lol Maybe this should be moved to P&R

😉

..."when they pry it from my cold, dead, greasy hands".

lol!

People just looking for beefs, they've got nothing else better to do. Hoseman posts a long comprehensive post talking about his experiences, they cherrypick the last line and jump on him all over about it. I write one, she cherrypicks the last line, the most inconsequential line, obviously not meant very seriously. That's the one that gets the snarky comment (I think she's sore at me for something, I don't know, I'm getting that impression! lol) Whole lotta skimming going on! "Hmmm.....what's my in.....what's my in! I know I can make a dig somewhere! There it is. Ahem. 'Aha! So you say fish don't feel pain!' " lol.

The point of the forum is to talk, discuss, sometimes that includes disagreement and that's OK. But let's reel in our focus, I know it's hard, but the class is over here. We are talking about veganism, not guns, not the analysis of how people post, and certainly not who's mad at who lol. This ain't the high school lunch table .

I don't know if fish feel pain or not and I kind of look at animals all the same sometimes, but for health reasons I have thought about being a pescetarian. I'd try vegetarian, but I really love sushi. Salmon is my favorite, but I heard it has high mercury levels, despite hoseman saying the levels are low. So kinda confused now but will have to do more research I guess.

A great book for vegetarian cuisine is The Vegetarian Flavor Bible by Karen Page.

Happy eating.

I hope that was a fish pun!

The only beef I'm looking for comes from a dead cow! Lol

Well, this thread is getting more interesting...! Let's hope it doesn't get too much more heated... XD

For the record, though, I feel the need to point out that fish do, indeed, feel pain. There are very, very few creatures on Earth that don't, and nobody wants to eat those. Unless filet of starfish sounds appealing to you...

No, the reason fish are often the exception to not eating meat is because they're so different from us. Psychologically speaking, we have an easier time eating animals that bear little resemblance to ourselves than we do eating animals that are more like us. That's why most people aren't okay with eating cats and dogs--they're not food to us. They have visible, discernible emotions and personalities that reflect our own. We can read their faces and body cues as easily as we can read each others', and after millennia of being our constant, faithful companions, a dog or a cat is practically one of us. Eating monkeys and apes is just as bad, if not worse, as they're so eerily similar to humans that eating one would feel like cannibalism.

Fish, on the other hand, are creepy and gross. Those constantly-staring eyes, those gaping mouths, their simple minds and lack of easily-detectable emotions and personalities... They're super different from us, so we tend to not have any problem eating them.

Actually, this presumes that most people stop eating meat because of concern for animal rights. In fact, I believe most people who otherwise don't eat meat eat fish because it's a leaner protein. Vanity and concern for health is what I encounter most people changing their diets for. In fact, the two biggest animal rights people I know eat meat, and are always bemoaning that they can't stop.

Yeah, I a became a vegan for a much better reason: because I wanted to impress a girl.

LOL! I hope it worked! I tried to impress a girl once by shallow diving off of a rock into 2 feet of water, breaking my neck, lol! I never saw her again, but I'll bet she remembers me to this day! lol.

My ex is in between San Diego and L.A and she just made herself a huge garden and is now only eating what she grows, not for health, not for animal rights, just so she doesn't have to spend money on food.

Well, I am no longer a Vegan and I'm married to a different woman.
