Ever since Veronica Mars got cancelled there's been a ton of fan support for a movie, but no money. So out of nowhere a couple of days ago, Rob Thomas (the creator of the show) and Kristen Bell (the cutest human being in the universe) started a kickstarter project, which is a website where people can get money in advance directly from their fans. They were looking for two million dollars, the largest amount ever solicited on kickstarter. They hit the goal in 12 hours, and they're currently at around 3.5 million. So they're going to start filming this summer, and they're looking for an early 2014 release.

Ooh! I noticed the Kickstarter the day it was opened. I cannot hold my excitement for this project. I fell in love with the series 15 minutes into the first episode and it has captivated me throughout seasons one and two. (Season three was after they were bought out into another network and the writing took a strange turn for me.)

I will definitely be backing this Kickstarter for sure!

I'll enjoy it. And It's nice to see this was the first 'name' fan-funded project out of the gate. The show always had amazingly loyal fans.

I suspect that there will be lots of such popping up in the months ahead seeing as the fan funded format does seem to work. It's entertainment via commission. I think folks have been pushing at Whedon to do a Firefly this way.

He was asked about that, and he pointed out that a VM movie can really be made for a few million dollars, but a sci fi movie needs more like 40 million.
